Hello, I've been reading these posts for a couple months and have really learned a lot from you guys. I've just about decided to jump into the Plasma world and buy a Powermax 45. I'd be using it in my garage and just thought the option for the 50 ft. hand torch would be handy. I'll often end up working in the driveway on trailers and mowers. Is there any downside, other than price, to the longer cabling related to pressure or voltage drop that might affect performance? I realize I'll need to make up a longer ground cable, but that should be easy.

Howdy and welcome Skiziks,

I put a 50' Brand-X retrofit torch on a machine and it's actually an unwieldy beast of a cable when not needed. Of course when it's neeeded it's dandy. With a compact machine, the fifty footer will probably be bulky enough to make a heavy rack or cart mandatory to keep from tumbling the power source around. An injured long hose, of course, would be more expensive to replace.

If you don't think you'll regularly need a 50' whip, I ‘d recommend going with a shorter one. With your "modern design" slim and nimble machine, you may be better off going with a shorter cablehose and a longer power cord. When you occasionally need more reach you could just move the power source closer to the work.

Good Luck

An extension cord and air hose are a lot cheaper to repair/replace when you drop something on them.

I would have to agree...the Powermax45 is such a compact, lightweight plasma system that it is easy to carry close to the job. Adding a longer torch lead is costly, and makes the unit less portable. You can get torch leads to 75'.....but the lead ends up being larger and heavier than the plasma system itself.
