View Full Version : Can we edit out own posts again, please?

When was the last time the issue of being able to edit our posts was raised? I really hate seeing a post of mine only 30 minutes old and finding a missed typo and not being able to correct it. Plus, every once in a while we all say something that we realize soon afterwards should be rephrased or deleted as not a good idea. Might be nice to police ourselves. No other forum I visit prevents this editing. I think we are all on the same level of professionalism here not to abuse it.
The privilege was removed a long time ago when that level of professionalism wasn't here. I think it's about time to reintroduce it.
EDIT: DANG!! Wouldn't you know it? I have a typo in the bloody subject line!! And I can't fix it!! I did NOT do that on purpose... In fact, I've already hit "edit" 4 times to change wording and spelling in this one post.

Ok so you would like to reintroduce editing your own posts.
But then you say you have edited the post 4 times already.
Is it you want to be able to edit the Subject and can't?? Your message sounded like you wanted to edit content.
:dizzy:
Hit go advanced and you can edit title.

I'll try editing a title again, I thought I was in the advanced editing window but must have missed it as an option.
As it is now, your ability to edit your post expires within some time frame of posting; I thought I made that clear. Lots of times, I'll catch an error after that time period, and there it sits for eternity. No reason for that when a six-second edit job can fix it.
Many moons ago, there was a crowd here that abused editing privileges, and would delete their posts (or even whole threads if they were the OP) frivolously, so the privilege was taken away. I'm asking for this to be reconsidered; it's no big deal if it is or isn't.

MAC,
The current setting gives you 30 minutes to edit your message after posting it. In my mind, that's adequate -- but I'm willing to lengthen that to a reasonable amount if others speak up and have strong feelings.
I do feel, however, that we need to keep a limit; otherwise threads can become a mess and evolve into nonsense if posts are routinely changed well after the fact.
If, for any reason, you really feel a need to delete a post -- for instance, you've unintentionally offended someone or provided information that turns out to be inaccurate or dangerous (like that tip about giving your acetylene bottles a good shake before firing up) let me or any of the moderators know by Private Message. We're happy to work with you.
As for typos, we all mak 'em. :D
Best,

I like the 30 minute rule. For some reason I stumble and hit the shift key and all of a sudden the half finished message is posted. I have to be more careful where I put my fingers.

Like I said, no big deal. But I do routinely find typos, like the title of this thread (now that I see it CAN be edited) long after the 30 minutes, usually after someone's responded to it and you AGAIN reread what you wrote.
NOT THAT WE HAVE TO BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, but we're pretty professional here and there are not examples of messed up threads in the other professional forums that have no time limit.
Yep, we all make typos, which is why I love being able to fix mine as I see them, regardless of when I see them.
By far the most common thread messer-upper is imbedding a hosted picture (like on www.photobucket.com) and then removing the hosted picture in the future. Yet, we don't police that.
Lotechman, having the 30 minutes definitely helps. But having indefinite time doesn't hurt you.
Yes, I understand that I'm more anal that most when it comes to my own typing/spelling/grammar. Just thought I'd ask, that's all.

Ahhhh
Didn't realize there was a time limit to the editing function.

I'm on another bulletin board that uses vBulletin and they permit unlimited editing with no time limit. It's a good idea when people behave responsibly.....and of course, sometimes people (not me) make mistreaks (sic).
