I am currently making a utility Trailer. I was thinking of just using 3x2x1/4" Angle Iron for the Frame and supports under neath. I was considering using Channel but I only plan to use this trailer for a lawn tractor and just moving whatever I need to move.

Lets see some pics of the ones you guys have made, if you have. I would love to see them, maybe it'll give me some idea's.

Thanks,

Derek.

I made this one from 3" channel to haul my race car. You can scale it down for your use or maybe add an expanded metal floor.

Very nice Patrick, how heavy is your race car? I was suprised to see only one axle. I know the commercial trailers are over-built as my dual axle open car trailer was bought. However it was large enough that I just hauled home a full size Chevy 2500HD on the back of it. Very happy with the unit. Well, with the exception of the ramps (badly designed)as they folded in half under the weight of the truck when very slowly pulling it on with a manual winch. :) I had to fillet the ramps, to bend the thick metal back, re-inforce it and finally welded on some tabs to hold the ramps down after them flopping up and down when loading a car on.

Your trailer looks as equally well built...good job!

In the range of standard utility trailer axles, I've seen 6000Lb units that would probably suffice for a single-axle car trailer. There's a discussion on the relative merits of dual-axle vs. single-axle in a recent thread on utility trailer construction.

Thanks for the kind words. My race car weighs in at 2100 lbs without the driver. I used a 3500 lb rated drop axle. It tows very straight. The key to single axle trailers is get the load balanced properly. I built the trailer in 2001 for cost of $550 excluding my labor. Sorry about not getting right back with you just got back in town.

Thanks Patrick,

Your trailer work looks great too. I like the simpleness (is that a word?) of your design!

Patrick, Nice trailer I am planning on building a very similar trailer for my car. How long is your trailer, only the bed section.

Thanks

in my guesstimation you should have 4 wheels to start with and a surge brake system for 2 wheels at least....
race cars.. tools...parts... get heavy after awhile..
you may say "well i dont put that on my trailer"..maybe so but later on in life you'll want to...

if you have a race 300 miles away..better bring some spare tires...

have fun..

...zap!

Here is 6 1/2 X 10 trailer I made for a friend. It is made for quads and cycles. The ramp on the side folds up and is the height of the rest of the railing.
Still want to build a tilt, though.
