View Full Version : Did I wire my cord correctly?

Just bought a Millermatic 175. When I had the house built I ordered a 230 volt socket in the garage specifically for a welder. The electrician installed a NEMA 14-50 4-wire socket.

I just finished building an extension cord with a NEMA 14 plug on one end to match that socket and a NEMA 6-50 receptacle on the other for the plug that came with the machine.

As you can see, the problem is the NEMA 6-50 receptacle only has three wires. When I tested the voltage across the different wires, the voltage across XY on the 14-50 receptacle was 245 volts. The voltage across both XW and YW was 123 volts. So, I wired the extension cord to use X and Y as hots plus the ground, G, giving me 245 volts plus ground. Did I do this right or do I need to change something to keep from frying the welder? One socket on the 6-50 plug is smaller than the other. Does it matter which hot wire I attached to it?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you did it right. Use the two hots and the ground. In fact, if you have a plug that you build yourself, you don't even need to install the center neutral blade, which makes it 25% easier to push in and pull out. It does not matter which hot lands on a hot blade.
