There is no reference, however. Does anybody where they got this information? I'll email them this week

Very cool link. My father was a machinist for years before he retired. He's always a good reference point if you fellas need some pointers on a lathe. ;)

Hey Guys,
The link posted is actually chapter 7 of the U.S. Army's "Fundamentals of Machine Tools."
If you go to the following link you can get the ENTIRE book as well as many other tutorials like welding, metalcasting, Intro to machine tools, etc.
This is a GREAT resource.

I am personally afraid to look too closely at a lathe...I am sure that if I do, I'll buy one.:D

In the past nine month I went from 0 lathes to 2 lathes and a drill/mill. It's crazy. I purchased the first for a specific project. The second came after I discovered I couldn't complete the project with the first lathe.
Pretty cool how simple they are and what you can do. They are time consuming, very time consuming. Interestingly I don't think they are as expensive to operate as welding. You can make everything you need, If you have the time and creativity.
I've seen the statement "the lathe is the only tool that can make itself".
Knowing what I know now, the reasons I'd be "afraid" of buying a lathe is the time factor. The time from design, to setup, to clean up is considerable for many operations.

THIS is what I am afraid of. I have to curb my tendency to become interested in stuff these days. Compulsive interest in everything, that's my problem. There are no 12-step programs for that.
