Seems like the shaft on the bottom coming out of the tranformer is kind of sticky, how is the serviced? Should I take the front cover off the welder and spray it with WD40 or Oil it?

The front cover does not need to come off yet, take the center cover off. Then you will have good access to clean out the mechanism. Mine had years of dried, dirty, caked on grease in the gear teeth. I scraped and brushed all the heavy crud out that would come out, mainly dry first of all with a narrow screwdriver. Lots of gentle compressed air blasting helps. Perhaps a couple drops of light machine oil like 3-in-1 or air-tool oil will help to break it loose. Just get it to nudge a little bit, back and forth, back and forth. Clean as you go, it should loosen up with patience. Nice looking machine! :)

WD=40 tends to dry and turn to varnish.
I use it for a lot of things, just not for long term lubrication.

Bluewelder,s what do you like? I keep some left over synthetic oil in my oil can,I use that on my floor jack wheels, vice other maintenance.
