I have done a lot of research on here about the various stick welders from the Chinese brands to the Millers. I have decided to stick with the major brands. Given that I only have a 30 amp 220V power source (breaker box is full with no room to expand), I have decided to get an Inverter Stick welder. It appears that the 2 best deals are the Thermal Arc 161S and the Forney AT-160. A few questions:

1. Is Forney a reputable company? It seems that their welders have been discontinued, so support may be an issue.
2. Is 160 amps DC enough? I typically weld 1/2" or smaller on mild steel.
3. Of the 2 welders listed, which one would you suggest? The TA 161S is $607 from Cyberweld and the Forney is $399 from an ebay seller.
4. Is there another option that I am not considering?

160 amps DC is plenty, you could even tackle 1" plate if you wanted to (multiple passes).

The TA 161s has lift-start tig and is a 110/220v machine.

Not unless you want to spend more money these would be your lowest priced options.

I ordered the TA161s today and am excited about getting it. I will learn stick before trying some TIG with it. What sold me over the Forney is support.

Forney is one of the last brands to buy from. That thermal arc has a solid 3 year warranty and is probably the best in its class (even Miller) to begin with. I personally would spend a little extra for the 200 amp with the tig capability but alot of people are going to want a tig that can do AC for aluminum. That cyberweld price is really good too if it includes shipping. Distributor Net Price is just under 900 bucks i think. Excellent buy!
