Hello all.... I am new to this site... I have two SP-175 Plus MIG welders... I use the crap out of them. I run around 22-lbs of .023 a month thru them... My oldest welder, which is around 8-yrs old died this evening... It was setting an running with no welding be done... All of a sudden it popped an a electrical flash happened very fast... The breaker did not trip. It will not run an the cooling fan does not even run.. it is dead... I opened it up an there is power going to and thru the breaker an to the board on the top case... There is power coming out of that board... That is as fare as I could trace it... Any idea? I was going to calk it up as died with a good life served to me... But, is it worth looking deeper into, or is there some place i need to check out.. Diode? Power Supply?

The fan motor has 4 wires. two large plugs and two smaller. The two large ones should have 230 volts and the two smaller ones should have 24 volts. The 24 vac comes from the fan motor and is used to power the control pcb. You can ohm check the two windings in the fan motor. If the welder was just setting there with the fan running and it flamed out, The fan motor probably shorted out. At that time there wasn't any power to the weld transformer.
The fan motor is a transformer with a built in motor. No 230 vac at the motor, then look at the line switch and the back panel circuit breaker. According to your post you have power to the pcb, This is why I am directing you to look and the fan / transformer. When measuring 230 volt AC, Always measure hot to hot and look for 230 volts. Not 115 vac to ground. You can have an open leg and still have it read 115 vac. because you are reading the same side of the line twice. you are reading through another part and getting a false reading,

Holy-Cow... My mistake... It is a SP-135 Plus... The 120V unit not the 175... Not sure what I was thinking when I typed that...:dizzy:

Just to up-date... I bought a new fan motor an installed it the other night... That fixed the problem... :blob3:
