Ok, just read somewhere to get my hands on some scrap that is similar size to what I intend to weld. Figure out the settings to burn through the metal and back off just a bit for best penetration.

I'm using a millermatic 175, solid core...and YES, I'm a newbie welder! :drinkup:

Use the machine settings listed on the door for a starting point. They are usually close to what you want.
