I know a guy that's selling a MM185 & I'm interested in picking up a welder. I don't know how to weld, but I'd really like to start to. I plan to use it mostly for my 4x4 stuff. I did read that it welds up to 3/8" metal. I just have plans to weld a cage, some bumpers, and maybe boxing my frame which I think may be 3/8. So I'm just wondering what suggestions you all have, whether to pass or go ahead with it? Thanks.

If it's a reasonable price, go for it. You don't need the absolute best machine out there to start welding and continue using it on into your next venture.

Same class machine as the current MM210, for comparison purposes. Very capable.

Performance wise, the MM 185 is a very good unit. If the unit is in good condition and the price is reasonable, for what you've listed, the MM 185 would be a good choice.

Mac,

I guess you could consider the MM 185 roughly in the same machine class as the 210. The 210 having more power on the top end that allows it to leave the short circuit transfer, in my opinion, puts the MM210 in a different class of unit. The MM 185 would be grouped with Hobart's Ironman 210, but with a better duty cycle.

That makes more sense, Dan. Thanks for clarifying the difference.

I just brought home a Millermatic 210. I'd been using a Lincoln 225a buzz-box for a few years now. Got to test it out at the place I bought it. Never used a mig before until last Sat. First hour was spent trying it out, and the next hour was spent kicking my own @ss for not getting a mig sooner. :blob4:

Sooooooooo much easier to use!!
