I just started welding and I was wondering what the proper length of the arc would be for stick welding?

Depends on the electrode. They operate differently.

You're in the ballpark, it's actually .128

ok thanks Iwill try that
I am sure there are many other variables but I was once told the arc length should be equal to the diameter of the electrode as a general rule of thumb so for 1/8 rods .125.

I was kidding. .128? Cmon man!

I've been told "As close as you can without sticking the rod in the puddle."

You guys are gettin way too technicle, and yer gonna screw the micrometers up with splatter.
Scratch the damn stick like a match and PRACTICE.
If yer too young to remember scratchin a match we got a heap of trouble.
Do stores still sell Strike Anywhere matches?
Can't find them around my neck of the woods.
