We run these cartoons in American Machinist (http://www.americanmachinist.com). They're called "Chips-n-Burrs"

I was in the cartoon file earlier today for another thread and it occurred to me it would be fun to post these occasionally. So here's one.

Hey Bob, as long as we're on the subject I saw a while ago a full page ad for I forget what, but the ad picture was of a guy welding up inside a door panel on a car, oblivious to the fact the car was blazing behind him. Are you familiar with it? Had it hanging on the wall for a while before it was lost, great ad!

Is this an open cartoon forum?

Or are you keeping it to "Management Only?"

Because this would be a good thing..

As long as it stays "metal" orientated..

We have a bunch of "stuff" in the shop that would make you laugh..

...zap!

Have fun. Post what you've got. Two rules:
1) Metal oriented
2) Respect copyright -- please don't post stuff that belongs to others and is copyright protected.

OK, y'all got me. I don't weld. My projects tend to be limited to household repair. My fingernails tend toward clean, and my job is at a desk.

Can I still stick around and play?

Bob, are you familiar with a great old (1920's-50's or so) cartoonist, J. R. Williams? In his youth he dropped out of school to become an apprentice machinist. There's a book, "Machine Tool Reconditioning" by Connelly that features a bunch of cartoons by Williams on the toils and travails of the machinist's life that are outstanding. Williams was well-known long ago for his regular strip called, "Out Our Way," but the cartoons he did for the little audience of professional machinists tops everything. I'm unlikely ever to have any more use for Connolly's book myself, but keep it so that once a decade I run across it and open it up to marvel at Williams' talent and insights once again.

Seattle Smitty: Many years ago when I was a lad, J. R. Williams had a book of Cowboy cartoons as well. I believe it is still over at the ranch. If me memory serves me correctly, there was a There was a black bird in each picture somewhere OR a pair of eyes fitted into the picture somewhere. I know there were two cartoonists that did those. One did the eyes, one did the Bird. It's Been many many years since I saw those, but they were really good.

How do I know if Im breaking the copyright law and will they come after me?
For example; Lincoln Electric has a definition in one of there books on how load limits are determined (mass/inertia) . If I scan and paste it to a relevant thread, will the Lincoln police come after me? I would think that Lincoln would appreciate that I own their book and discuss it on this forum but, how would I get permission?
Is there a loophole like, just retype what they said?:help:

smawgmaw

Check with Lincoln and see if they give permission to "reuse" any of their content. In some of their printed material (books and such) there are statements on how and if anyone can use their printed information (as in most printed books and journals). If you dont want to go through all that trouble, you may be able to quote their material, but make sure you credit them for the info. Otherwise paraphase the material in your own words. If you are really concerned, dont copy and paste any one's material in any way, shape or form.
