My Jackson AD apprentice has worked well for me. It's pretty simple, shade 3 when open , shade 10/11 when triggered.

I'm not 100% sure about it having a rechargeable battery in it somewhere. IIRC, it's an all solar powered unit. It's been stored in the dark a few years.

I guess my concern is how do I check my AD for safe operation? Put it on a strike an arc? If the AD doesn't work does the Jackson provide full IR/UV protection even in the light state?

I don't mind a few bright spots that will go away with time if no damage is done but don't relish getting any long term injuries.

Hopefully a Jackson rep can answer.

Hey , if this little Jackson stills works safely I'm considering a step up in their line. I go with what I know what works for me.

My Optrel MiraPlus is solar operated without a battery and responds to a 100 watt light at 2-3 feet -- no need to strike an arc to test it.

my Jackson apprentice also responds to a 100 watt bulb if i have the sensitivity turned up. and thats easier on the eyes than an intentional "test flash"

I'm still curious though.

If the AD feature fails to trigger do all modern helmets still provide 100% UV & IR protection or not?

So is it a "real" flash (burning off the fluid eye coating) or more like a flash stun grenade?

Is there any permanent damage from repeated AD failure from blocked sensors or low batteries and whatnot ?

I want to know my visitors (and me) aren't suffering real damage.

Bump, still hoping Jackson will confirm/deny 100% UV protection if the Apprentice AD fails to trigger.
