I just noticed on a different website that smaw is also refered to as mma so I guess it can go both ways but smaw is most commonly used

Hi Markopolo and everyone! Like you, I'm new to both this site and to welding. I read and learned alot from the great guys on the "other" site but just about the time my buddy, fla jim talked me into joining, the feces hit the air handler. I'm sure that since most of the gang has followed franz over here this site will become even better. FYI on fl jim: he ain't nearly as dumb as he looks!

Welcome 1911man ! I was only on the "brand X" site for
about 2 weeks before all this went down. Thanks to
the allmighty Franz, we've got another home....(for how long, I
don't know)....but I hope it lasts more than 2 weeks :D

you'll find it stands for manual metallic arc at least in did when I started welding 28yrs ago
