Hello,

New to this great forum. I'm considering the purchase of a Dragster 85 to learn/practice TIG and complete/fix an truck exhaust project. Why a D85? Because I can fit it in my budget of under $500, 110v and supportable (of course if anyone has a recommendation for something else I'm all ears...).

I am ignorant in regards to TIG torches and was wondering if anyone could tell me how the D85 torch connects to the gas. Does the gas go through the unit or is it directly attached to the torch? Can I get a better torch than the 600302 TA model for less than the aprox 100$ I see it priced at?

My welding experience is with a huge Lincoln MIG welder I learned with in class and my little weldpack 100 at home. I had a brief lesson and little practice with a Lincoln TIG welder when I was taking my MIG classes.

The downpipe is assembled and needs to be fixed. I used my Weldpack 100 with .023 309L on 409SS Heat setting A Wirespeed 4 to 5. Unfortunately the butt welds have a number of pin holes. I just couldn't get the weld pool flat like I can with mild steel. My reasoning for getting a TIG welder is that I get another tool (which is always good for me), I could learn TIG and I could go over the MIG welds to close up the pin holes (Instead of grinding away and going back over all the welds again with the MIG).

Thanks
TG

I got this one for mine SR9V-12-2 Series Tig Torch Weldcraft (WP-9V) Style 125 Amp Air Cooled with GAS VALVE and 2pc. 12 ft. cable assembly. Ebay price with shipping approx. $70. Since there is no gas solenoid in the Dragster, you have to have the valve gas control on the handle, and hook it directly to the bottle / flowmeter. For a low buck, high quality unit, you can't beat the D85 IMO. http://stores.ebay.com/Aglevtech-com-Auctions
