Well heres mine Miller elite, which I love. And a 3m resipirator and some of the best gloves I've ever had that I got a princess auto for about $8. Also is my old princess auto AD that I had for about a year now.
Now its your turn:cool:

Some of the best $ Ive spent. Nah. It IS the best $ Ive spent on welding. Has the least "behind your head" exposure out there and is almost sinfull. So nice that Ive even forgotten how much I spent on it, but I do remember it being less than what they were charging for clearance... Oh yeah, its an Optrel Satellite in Cosmic Copper.

Those Optrel helmets look really nice. I use the regular autodarkening ones you find at Princess atuo with the square plastic lens replacements and tend to burn them up pretty easy from gettin close to my welds. I like to see what I'm doing. :)
Whats the cost for the replacement lenses on the Optrel Helmets?
They don't sell those helmets anywhere where I live and I'd have to order one online or ebay it.

Well, I got a 10 pack of lenses with the helmet, but dont know what the replacements would cost otherwise. Found a pack of 5 at weldingsupply for $16. The only changes Id make would be an ipod adapter, Bose surround system, Plasma screen, and maybe A/C.:cool:Do you have an Airgas near you? Could give one a try if youre ever in there.

I thought that was all standard equipment on those helmets ????
I dunno about buying one now.
We have Princess Auto, but the only thing they carry in stock are those el-cheapo helmets for $19.99 and one autodarkening type...which I have.
I'm still in college, but once I'm done I'll be investing in one of these.
I know here in Canada some job sites now require welders to wear a hardhard while welding......doesn't look as if these ones are compatable.

My Princess doesn't have the $99 AD in stock. Haven't for months. :( I was told they put them on sale all the time for $50 and I've been waiting, patiently.....
Although I've got a Jackson Apprentice AD and Selstrom AD neither are adjustable shades. For $50 I'm willing to try the Princess hood, if they ever get them in and have a sale.

I have a pic of my hoods. I wear uvex safety glasses. Yellow tinted indoors and on rainy days, dark mirrored on sunny days. 3M respirator with P100 filters. Black Stallion 200 gloves by Revco.

The hood on the end is a Jackson. Its the same hood as the one below except it has a regular shade 10 green lense. I painted it silver so I knew it was mine when everyone here wore the same kind.
The 3M half mask respirator fit them like a glove. Its the same one RichCharles has. The exhaust vent lines up with the vent on the Speedglas hood. I don't know if it was planned or not but works good. I weld in the rain and cold and have never had a Speedglas hood fog up. It was a constant problem with my Jacksons. I always carried a bottle of Joy soap. One thing about it, It always smelled lemmon fresh in my hood. :) Just a pain in the rear though.

Thanks for the info spud, Ill upgrade my n91 or whatever those things are to one of the half masks as soon as I pay the mortgage off on the helmet. heh. My miller fogs up something awful. Joy you say.. hmm.
spuddown
03-05-2007, 08:19 PM
Rub a little joy soap on the lens and it keeps it from fogging up. You have to reapply it a couple times a day but it takes care of it.

Anyone recommend decent clape sleeves in Ontaro. Something decent, leather, not to much stratch. I don't want a full jaket, too hot when it's 90F outside. I happy with my apron and gloves and chopped up an apron to make a hood cover and bib with piped in air from another apron over my hood. Keeps me cool on hot days and keeps the fumes out, even galvy. Protects my neck and arms great. I don't use use a respirator, positive pressure keeps the junk outside of my hood.
Thanks

Princess Auto AD hood for $50 along with my other hoods. Can anyone confirm my PA AD hood is the same thing HF sells?
My maniac buddy bought my Jackson apprentice and his wife uses my old fibre-metal to watch. She's actually interested in welding! Fancy that, lucky dog. Left out my fire cans and ventilation contraption.
Still need cape sleeves, going to LWS to check it out.
One for Tig and one for Mig, or for friends. Big windows are nice.

Only picture I have handy, it started life as a boring black helmet from Home Depot, then I put in an Arc One AD lens, then it got painted silver, then gold, then money green, then gold again, then forest green, then copper, then it got a sticker from my favorite Land Rover site. I also have 2 more plain jane black ones with fixed lenses for people to wear while helping or watching.
Add to that about 20 pairs of gloves in all different styles, safety glasses for guest, a face sheild for me (I wear glasses so the sheild's the only way to go) couple pairs of qxy-ace goggles, some jackets and aprons, ear plugs and muffs, a few different kinds of resperators, a fire extinguisher on my cart, and a Honda powered fire pump with a 35,000 gallon swimming pool if things get really out of hand (actually that's more for wild fires than welding)

When welding you guys use respirators? or that´s just the "safety gear" for grinding etc...??
Doolittle
04-14-2007, 06:16 PM
you use em all the time, if your allways around grinding, cutting, brazing and welding in a closed enviroment. Saves you from welding fever and several sinus and lung problems. Our bodies dont like some of that stuff. I dont wear my respirator if I have an airflow. Welding gasses are typically heavier than air and float to the floor. And I am bad cause I usually dont wear one when grinding. Though I do wear my safety glasses when grinding. Its just good practice, and literally saves you a headache (specially when using flux in any process).

you would be better of getting it out of the states it will cost less

Yeah, I have checked out him but he does not ship out of the US. I have found another seller there that will ship to Aus for a few more dollars.
Are there many Aussies here on this forum? As I am thinking of getting a small group (3-4) together who also want a Miller Elite helmet to split/bring down the cost of shipping to make the buy even cheaper.

Well, I'm fairly new to the forum, so Hello everybody,
On a daily basis I use my Miller Big Window Elite, with custom chameleon paint (it changes from green to purple, depending on where the light hits it)
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a279/SonyMobile/newlid1.jpg
That's what It looked like right after paint, also has a chrome sticker on the front displaying my name
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a279/SonyMobile/DSC03524.jpg
My lineup of lids, the first is just a cheapo $50 AD that has been used once.. when you strike an arc, it turns blue instead of green, which is kind of neat, the second is a Pro-Tek Clearvision which I use mainly for overhead work, or anything messy, and last, my beloved Miller Elite with chipped and faded paint..
I also rock a Prostar beanie, Prostar saftey glasses, Carhartt Overalls. I will really use any glove, if they are cheap ones, I'll normally cram 2 on my left hand and one on my right, but for personal use I love Watson's that are sold at Marks Work Warehouse, they are bright orange and last forever.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a279/SonyMobile/DSC03527.jpg
Tillman "medium weight" jacket, has flame retardant cotton body, with leather sleeves for light duty welding (brand new gloves!)

O.K. guys, I know I'm old school but I would rather have my old Jackson fixed shade over anything else. As you can tell it's been used once or twice, not so pretty like some of the hoods displayed in this thread. As for the rest of the gear, it all depends on where I'm at and what I'm doing as to what I use but I do have it all. Dave

here is my new one I brought a miller digital elite they don't sell them here in oz unless you buy a Vortex Welding Respirator kit (http://www.welding.com.au/nd77-9/new-vortex-welding-respirator/) click the text and you see the kit they cost $1600 for the kit and our miller said there was not release date yet for just the helment so I imported 2 from the US for $350 each which is still $150 cheaper than a std elite over here so the new one stays at home for my after hours work and my old one will stay at work

Womens size gloves here ^
I might not qualify as a expert welder but I do know a few things such as welding with out gloves hurts, if you smell burning cloth check your self (your most likely smoldering), wearing a cap helps avoid premature bald spots, and last but not least wear sleeves don't be like me and end up with spatter burns on both arms.

Basic screen, does the job, actually prefer it to the auto ones!

Another basic face mask for grinding

Cheap pair of Tig Gloves, very good though, only use them when welding ali, or in a tight area where i'm likely to burn my hands on the surrounding metal.

That's about it. Keep a heavy cotton shirt handy for goin' up, or something over my head.
Helmet crica 1994 Campbell Housfield. Usually got one of those stickin' outta my mouth when it decides to flip down.:D
Gave up on ear muff hearing protectors, always forget where I laid 'em down. Keep the ear plugs in all of the time. It's easier, but sometimes not too good an idea. Ran out half a cyl. of O2 once because I forgot to turn the valve off at the torch. :p
Don't have to worry about OSHA around here.;)

I have a Miller American Eagle Performance Series that I have bought, when I first started welding. My current job gives out SpeedGlas 9000 Series, some guys get the 9000X and some the 9000V. I have burned my eyes with the SpeedGlas, but never my Miller. I have started using my own helmet at work, and leaving the SpeedGlas in my locker.

How is that 9100 compared to the other Speedglas units? I have a 9000X, a 9002X and 3 non-electrics but I am curious about the 9100.
Friggin' HUGE window on that one.

Oooh, I'm liking that new Speedglas. It would look sharp next to the three 90002X that I have. I'd admire them right up until the wife came out and saw that I'd bought another one. Then probably not so much!

Black Wolf - The 9100 is most excellent. The headgear is incredibly comfortable and has tons of adjustment. The electronics have some new options like a grinding mode and constant dark mode too. The hood is pretty light and well balanced, overall I would say a great improvement over the existing Speedglas stuff. The 9100XX big window is nice too, built in cheater adapter too.

My god, this is an old thread!
Don't have pictures (lately!) but my taste in helmets has changed...I now use a huntsman 411p as it is light weight and it flexes (You can bend it onto itself) to get into tight places. Looking at getting another aethermal lense for it (The one I had got shattered when I was off shift and nobody manned up to admit they accidently broke it, possibly while flipping something with the overhead crane...and that was when I decided to bring my jobbox into work!) , but for the time I just use an el cheapo princess auto glass shade 11 (I burn a lot of metal core and flux core lately) I tried going back to a cheapo gold plastic lense, but it didn't do it for me...The plastic just scratches to easily and the gold coating on them is junk! The first time you have to clean the gold side of the plastic, the lense is buggered!
My welding jacket is just a cheap seafoam green flame retardant cotton jacket... It works and is quite a bit lighter than leather, although not as durable. The company I'm with supplies gloves. They have both the thick blue "pipeliner" gloves and the ones I wear, the lighter gloves with the reinforced backing on the left hand...which is useless for me...I'm left handed, so the reinforced backing pad serves no purpose!
I am not required to wear high viz in my present work environment. A surveyors vest is really all you would need, unless you work in a lot of greasy holes (been there, done that!) upon which you may want coveys with high viz stripes on them. Generally in this case, your employer will supply them. If they are nice, they will be blue coveys with high viz stripes as opposed to orange with high viz stripes. :)
IMO, the only use I have found for the plastic gold lenses is to act as a mirror...for welding those ignorant joints that engineers design! (it's not hard once you adjust to the backwards, angled perspective!)
My chopped pipeliner is a backup and I'm looking at getting a wide lens huntsman 451p for those "lots lots of welding" days!
*edit* And we can't forget the jobsite radio...to maintain sanity....and how we alternate mp3 players hooked up to FM transmitters! Sanity is safety, right! (Local Radio Sucks!)...and the big stereo...and the two other ones at work...in the fab shop!
Also, the machine shop got a new CNC milling machine and it looks EPIC! Job security for the win!

And my old Huntsman fixed shade backup. This lid really has been to he11 and back. I took it with me to Iraq in 2004 and used it almost everyday welding uparmor on vehicles.
