The Ironman 230 is roughly in the same output power and duty cycle class size as the PM 216, MM 212, and ESAB Migmaster 215.

The 230 produces a smooth softer style arc that wets the weld puddle out well.

I've never ran a PM 216, but I favor the 230 over it, due to the fact that the 230 offers 5 more voltage taps (output ranges) to choice from then the 216.

I haven't ran the MM 212 or Migmaster 215 either. However I favor the 230 over the 212 because based on the numbers Miller is supplying on the MM 212, the 230 offers significantly more top end power.

The single driven drive roll set up on the ESAB 215 looks lame, and probably won't feed wire as well through a 15' gun lead as the dual driven systems of the 230, 212, or 216.

Thermal arc Fabricator 210 is another option...
    210 Amp at 25.3V, 40% Duty Cycle
    176 Amp at 23.6V, 60% Duty Cycle,
    16 voltage taps..
Indiana Oxygen is selling them for $1350, free shipping.

ironman 230 is a nice looking made in usa machine though..

Have not run an ironman. We have Lincoln 215(216)s and 1 Miller 212 at work. The Lincoln seems to do a little better on galvanized. The 212 seems to dance around a liitle more instead of just going through the zinc. The downside to the 212 and Ironman is the gun. It is a top quality gun, but the neck is too short, maybe not quite enough bend for my comfort either. The trigger seems a little smaller also. I think a longer neck may be available. This would require putting in a new liner.
On the Lincoln there is a big step between tap 4 and 5. The ironman would be easy to use with all those taps.

I undedrstand both the 230 (with 12 taps) and 216 (with 7 taps) are rated to weld 1/2 inch. Here is where i am confused. The door chart on the 230 says to weld 1/2 inch with C25 and 035 wire use tap 7.

The first thing you can do to help make yourself become a better welder, would be to ignore the supplied door chart settings on a machine. The settings on the 230 door chart are just a Hobart employees opinion. Besides maybe a multiple pass butt joint, tap 7 is to cold of an output for any flat, horizontal, or overhead weld joint constructed out of 1/2" steel.

Depending on the input voltage be supplied, joint design, and position of the weld, tap 7 on the 230 realistically falls in the 3/16" - 1/4" mild steel range.
