    Older M180 with Spoolmate 100...wiring?

I've searched the forum and haven't found a direct answer.

My question:I just bought an older M180 and realized it needs a "retrofit kit" to run the Spoolmate 100 gun. I believe the standard Spoolmate 100 comes with a retro "switch".....but not the power pins for the plug on the M180. The true retrofit kit 300409 has both, but it's like $50-60 for some wiring and pins.

Has anyone modified their M140/M180 themselves, without the kit?

I'm wondering now if I should just sell the M180 and purchase myself a later model 180 or 211.

When I got my 3035 spoolgun for my MM185, I needed the hook up kit. Miller sent me the kit at no change.

There really isn't much to the kit. It has a switch that turns off the drive in the machine when you want to run the spoolgun and a T with valve that shunts the gas to the spoolgun hose rather than to the main gun. If you are at all savvy about electonics and can trace wires this shouldn't be that tough.

I think the MM185 has a different setup than a MM180. The MM180 doesn't need a T valve, just a switch and some wiring changes.

I contacted Miller and they told me I needed the retrofit kit and to contact my distributor to purchase it. At least one distributor I contacted thought Miller had discontinued the kit, but I asked again and I'm waiting on an answer.

I just re read the posting and my kit is only part of the solution. I googled the kit number and found this http://www.millerweldersales.com/pro...product_id=943 $55.00 is a little steep for a switch, couple of connectors and two pins and wire. It appears to be available, good luck.

Edit: you replied while I was replying....we basically said the same thing, but I'm still interested. $55 is crazy for a switch and some pins (oh, and a sticker, can't forget that!).

Thanks Grandslam.....I'll take you up on that offer. I "think" that is the switch provided with the Spoolgun, which is made for later model M140/180 units that don't have a switch, but have internal wiring for the extra two power pins (the Spoolgun needs pins 1&2 for trigger, 3&4 for power, whereas the standard MIG gun only uses pins 1&2 for the trigger. The older M180 is missing pins 3&4....physically not in the connector). However, your switch would probably get me 80% of the way there. This is what the actual kit looks like:

The sockets needed for the trigger plug can be bought in bags of 5 from Miller.
Or from an electronics store that sells AMP plugs.

Yeah, I did some research on the plug. It's a CPC series 1 (for cable or panel mount) size 11 socket. The pins in the socket are these:
    66360-2 = 18-14AWG Crimp Socket pins, CPC Series 1: http://www.newark.com/te-connectivit...imp/dp/02J8001.

You can get a new socket and 5 pins from Miller, but I haven't seen just the pins from Miller.
