Syncrowave 250 - need help with HF

I have begun using my older Syncrowave 250 almost daily, and just started noticing a problem. This was not happening until a week or so ago. When I let off the pedal, the arc stops as it should but the HF is not cutting off immediately. It is like a little lightening show for several seconds. If I do not pull the torch away, it just keeps "lightening". About the same time as the post flow cuts out, the HF will quit on it's own.

Now it seems to be worse after changing from aluminum to steel or vice versa. And the time seems to diminish after each time, until eventually it cuts off as it should when the pedal is released. Then when you go to the other metal, it does the same for several times until it diminishes and acts properly. And, yes I am switching from HF Start to Continuous when I change.

Is there something in the way I have it set up, possibly Crater Time, or is there a relay that is sticking until it works itself free? It seems to me to be a timer or relay that is sticky because as I said, after 10-12 arcs, it cuts of as you expect. I have the Owner's Manual with the schematic, but I'm not good enough to figure the electronics out, but could change a relay or clean the pin on the pedal or something.

    Any help is appreciated.

Re: Syncrowave 250 - need help with HF

This happened to another WW member on a Syncowave 300. http://weldingweb.com/showthread.php...ht=crater+fill

He found that Crater Fill is supposed to be off when using a foot control.

That feature is for using an on/off switch on the torch.

    Hey Dave.
Thanks. I think I may have read that post before but did not remember it. That may be the problem. I don't remember changing the Crater Switch but I may have (or my grandson Charlie. 4 year olds love switches!).

I'll check that first thing in the morning. I'll let you know if that fixes it.

    Thanks again!

    Hey Dave.

I think you fixed my problem. The Crater Switch was on, so I turned it off this morning and things are back to normal.

Seems like the Owners Manual would have specified to turn it off when using a foot pedal.

    Thanks again.

Re: Syncrowave 250 - need help with HF

For anyone reading this thread, I took a picture of my Syncrowave 250 and added the "default" settings as I understand them. This should help any newby setting up their Sync to at least have a good starting point. The Owner's Manual is not clear enough to me when you are just learning.

I printed several copies, put a couple with my Owner's Manual and laminated one to keep with the machine.

Let me know if this is helpful.

Also, if anyone has a correction or other recommendation, please post here.

Here is a link to a Technical Manual for the Syncrowave 250:

When using the foot control, the HF is off until you step on it. Then it either comes on continuous, or for starting, depending on your setting.

At least that's how it is on mine.

Re: Syncrowave 250 - need help with HF

    Gamble,
Dave is correct. HF Continuous for Aluminum, Start only for Steel, and then you can turn HF off completely for Stick.

The original question had to do with the Crater Fill switch which apparently still allows amps to taper off when using a remote switch, other than a foot pedal, to prevent cracking.
