    Amnesty turn in drop box

i was asked to make a box last week that U.S. Customs requires us to have on ship. The thing is that you are to be able to put things in but not take out. So with that said if someone is felling guilty for having some drugs or a special beverage and they dont want to be caught with it, put it in the box without being seen and nothing will happen to you. With those requirements i made this contraption to satisfy the need for this arts and crafts project to get them off my back about it so i could get back to other needed jobs. it is mounted high enough that while standing you can get your arm up to your elbow in and your hand will fit though the one way doors at the bottom of the drop tube. hope you all like.

I guess its a good idea....but who is going to be trusted to empty it or check it? What happens if its too large to go into the box? Just curious.

Did they say what type of items the box would be used for? such as a gun ammo drop drop if so the drop box doors have to be made so that they cannot hit and accidently set off the primers on the ammo.

the ships Master at Arms or (MP) for other services has the key. they were mainly concered about bottles of beer or wine that were not turned in. that was the problem before as to what they found during surprise inspections of berthings. i lot of knives were found to, mainly small wepons. as far as wepons or ammo you can fit a pistol down it but if something like that was found that would open a whole mess of worms. we can buy guns overseas as long as we turn them in when we get to the ship.

Those look like some heavy counterweights. Will light objects be able to actually open the door?

you have to push them though. it will keep people from wanting to climb up and put there whole arm in to try to get something. i do think i overkilled the weights though in that pic. i have already taken some weight off to make it more user friendly rather than take your hand off. lol

My first thought was how soon it would be until some poor slob loses a finger!
With lighter counter weights it'll prolly just skin 'em a bit!

nice little box there. two door design seems better than a single flap.

wasn't aware small knives are not allowed on ship?

If I was on a ship and wanted to get rid of something why not just throw it over board?

    Man, have times changed…
Navy circa 1971….We had a locked suggestion box mounted to the bulkhead over a trash can. Box had no bottom.

I was thinking something a little more subtle. Like a cardboard or metal tube to hold the doors open while you grab something.

That's the routine for seismic crews in the Gulf; or at least it was when I was visiting them in '97-99. Lots of things got 'float-tested'...

When I worked on an Army post the Ammo and explosives Amnesty turn in bunker was alway in site of a main road and cover by video cameras. Made me wonder how much amnesty one would have?

    Amnesty box suggestions:
Make them bigger, place a ladder on the outside that goes to the top, then install them along the border states.
