Review: Cen-Tech Digital Automotive Battery Analyzer 66892

I managed to score a deal on this "rare" item from Harbor Freight. For some reason they haven't decided to sell it online or advertise it. I'm shocked because their OBD scanners were a hit in my opinion (were the cheapest available for quite a while, but no longer). I may make a separate post about their OBD scanners. This one is just about their digital battery analyzer. A multi-meter does not do the job when testing a car battery. Carbon pile load testers are NOT good for batteries and actually cause damage. The only way to accurately test a battery is using a more advanced tester like this one.

MSRP $79.99 (sticker that was on the one I got)

Only available in stores or from the catalog:

    User Manual:

Like all HF tools I enjoy trying to figure out who exactly is the manufacturer. I have yet to discover this, but will post that when I figure it out and confirm it. I have seen it for sale on alibaba, but this is normal.

    More info & pictures coming...

    Testing a Battery:

    EverStart Lawn & Garden
    275CA, 230CCA
Group U1R-7 Mfd:May 2008 (been sitting most of its life)
    Mfg: Exide Dist: Wal-Mart

    Results:
    12.50 Volts
    21.19 mili-Ohms
    Estimated @ 123.1 CCA

I would be interested to test these results against a high dollar machine to see how accurate it is.

The electronics are interesting. Per standard Chinese procedure, the chip was covered in a VERY hard black epoxy to hide the chip's model number. I'm assuming it's a microprocessor since there's only one chip on the whole board. The quality of the soldering job is absolute CRAP. It is clearly done BY HAND. Surface mount components are not meant to be done by hand....unless you have slave labor...or are a hobbyist...

    Pictures:
    1) Powering On
    2) Enter the CCA rating of the battery
    3) Testing takes a few seconds (7-segment LCD configuration doesn't allow for correct display of the word "TEST"
    4) First page of testing results shows battery voltage and resistance
    5) Second page (have to press the "SEL" button) shows calculated effective CCA of the test

    Cons:
    - Testing wires cannot be disconnected from the unit
    - Does not come with a protective case other than the box
    - Low quality manufacturing, possibility for faulty units

    Pros:
    - Backlit LCD display for easy viewing
    - Protective "glove" around the unit
