    Need help connecting a L14-30P for a 240 generator (pictures)

    I need a little help connecting this up. I just bought a Hitachi E71 generator to run my Miller 180. I need to connect the 240 line and I am not sure how to rig it up.
    It is a L14 - 30P 240. This is what the Hitachi requires. Could someone walk me through the electrical connection? I would appreciate any help!
    here is the setup.....

    you have one ground, one neutral, and two hots. If you have a volt meter, it is pretty easy. If you don't know how to determine the hots, neutral, and ground then you really don't need to be doing this by yourself.

    Well yes I have determined that. That is why I am asking for a little help, thus not "doing this by myself."
    No, I don't have a volt meter.

    Hold on a sec

    Got a Pic I think

    Before we get that far

    You really need to get some Cord

    If you want to use the Romex to run the 180 temporarily... then use the Red & Black as the Hots and use the White as the Ground.

    BUT please buy some cord.

    on the L14-30
    X=Hot
    Y=Hot
    W= neutral which you don't use so do not terminate any wires to it.
    G=Ground.

    Good thing is you are wiring up a 240v device so even if you were to wire it 120v- not that big o' deal- welder just won't work

    Other way around and you let smoke out.

    Basically on that 14-30 you're going to be using the two straights and the U shaped almost round. The round is the ground and the straights are the hots. The black and white will be hot and the (ahem bare) green you don't have will be the ground. Leave the 'L' lug unoccupied.

    Like Broc says you really should be using some kind of flexible cord material.

    Ooops, scuse me I see you have the twist lock. Use Brocs drawing and ignore the my above statement about the 'L'. lug

    The cord I have is the cord in the picture in the first post, the black, white, red and ground green, that is all I have to work with

    Yes- but that is "Wire"- for behind the wall or in areas where it will not get banged up- for runs from the Electrical panel to a receptacle.

    Cord is what is on the Welder& Extension cords.

    Like I mentioned if you want to use the Romex wire you have temporarily you can but it is not the correct stuff.

    ...so use the Red, Black & White wires in the Romex you have in the Pic. Don't use the bare wire.

    I assume you have the Female 6-50r for your Welder to plug in to?

    Here is my current set up. This wire I had laying around and I have been using it to plug into a 240 dryer outlet in my laundry room.. It is 50ft of Romex. I do need to switch to cord not doubt. But until that time I need to make do with this.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!

    I do need to get some cord. SO, I suppose the questions is - what is the ideal setup for this combo -- Miller 180, Hitachi E71? I would like 50ft of cord. What is the best most affordable cord and where do I get it??

    You can buy 50' of 8-3 (8 gauge, 3 wire) SOOJ or SOOW 300 volt outdoor cord at Home Depot or Lowe's on the bulk reel, priced by the foot, for not all that much money. You can get away with less expensive 10 gauge if you're short on money.

    Ok

    since you already have the 6-50 wired in which colored wires did you use?

    Just match them on the L14-30 Plug
    X=Hot
    Y=Hot
    W= Not used in this application.
    G= Ground

    10/3 cord is plenty for the MM180

    Some times it is cheaper to buy a 10/3 extension cord and change the Connectors rather than buying Cord by the foot.

    Home Depot has a Ridgid 10/3 cord with 5-15 ends- just cut them off and install the L14-30 and 6-50

    Looks like you used the Black, white and Bare wire so

    Connect
    Black to X
    White- to Y**
    Bare wire -to G

    Rather than using romex I would suggest that you go to Lowe's or where ever and buy a 50amp electric range cord.

    They're open on Christmas? probably more $ than the Box stores.

    Seems like the price of those Ridgid 10/3 cords shot up in price

    Over Kill

    Range Cord will be 6g and at 50' $$$$ plus no need for 6g

    With the duty cycle of the MM180 one can actually use 12g Cord @ 50'

    So on the 3ft pig tail the Female W on the L14-30 does not get a wire is that correct???
    And the same on the male of the 50ft cord the W stays open with no wire?
    Just the x and y brass get wires and the ground???

    I had one of the W hooked up with white on the pigtail for some strange reason..
    I thought it was wrong but I wanted to make sure
