    Dump Trailer Build

This will take several posts so be patient lots of pics. These were built from prints supplied by the customer, they are the same ones northern sells as well as others. These plans are good not great but they are workable. The trailers are over engineered as you will see.

All welds were done using either a miller 210 or 251 and .030 0r .035 wire depending on the which welder was used, 75/25 gas. Settings weren't constant as the material wasn't consistently the same.

10 Foot dump bed, single cylinder lift, 12 volt pump, 3500 lb. axles, 2 5/16 hitch with hydraulic brakes, empty weight was projected to be a little less than 1900 lbs. actual weight was a little over 2600 lbs..

Some changes were made deviating from the plans. Plans called for 14 ga. floor and sides, used 10 ga.. The top rail on the bed called for 3x4x1/4 angle, used 2x2x1/4 as the 3" over hang looked as if it would make a good catch point for anyone getting close. The fenders were originally to have a 1/4" backing and be attached to the main frame. This was changed to mounting the fenders to the bed and deleting the 1/4" backing.

Now for what everyone was waiting for the pics.

That looks great. To buy one is alot of money. And I think it means more to build one your self.

Currious, how much did all the materials, hydraulics, axels etc, cost?

    Re: Dump Trailer Build

Built two of these they want three more. Cost of materials was approx. $3000 not sure what actual cost were as everything was supplied by the customer. They bought the axles, hydraulics, fenders, wheels and tires and coupler as a kit. Then had the steel they wanted used dropped off. So this is just a guess as to costs.

    Re: Dump Trailer Build

Look at this one then go look at any that are commercially built. There is no way to compete with them and build a trailer this heavy. My idea on costs were a guess. They supplied steel of unknown origin so it was cheap. All I had to do was build it. Fairly straight forward. These trailers are part of a rental fleet. They have several 14' dumps wanted something that could be pulled by a half ton. Will post some pics of the frames on commercially built dumps.

    Re: Dump Trailer Build

Aproximate cost sounds low. I'd guess it's closer to $4K than 3 from numbers I've looked at, but then they might have gotten a good deal because the bought in bulk. I know new 3500lb axels, brakes, springs, lights tires and rims came out to a bit over $2k when I priced out replacing axels on a 7K trailer for a customer, I could find a nice used 10K flat bed trailer for him for $2500 and he could choose between 6 the place had for sale. Hydraulic kit would add almost $1000-1500 or so because I've been looking at a dump body repair for another client. About what it will cost him to get a nice used dump body complete.

    Re: Dump Trailer Build

Good work. I'm thinking of a 5' x 10' dump myself. I'll have to start looking for plans. Already studying factory mades. I see a lot of rectangular tube being used tho instead of channel. I'll have to remember this thread and Boostins thread for refference.

    Sandy,
I would strongly recommend buying one unless you really want something special.

    Flatbusted,
What's the maximum dump angle and empty tongue weight on that thing?

    Re: Dump Trailer Build

empty tongue weight was 400# and dump angle is approx. 55-60 degrees. They clean out well. Put a load of creek rock on the first one to check how well every thing works. 2.5 ton and it went up like it was empty. Will be making changes to the next one. I don't care for the hinge set up as drawn in the plans.

post a picture of the hinge set up and then you modification. I love the build. I helped on one of these kit builds for a neighbor. He bit off more than he could chew. I would love to build one for myself if I had the monies.

    Re: Dump Trailer Build

Here is the hinge setup as designed. I haven't started anymore so no new designs but it will be similar to a dump truck hinge. 5" Channel 1 1/4" solid round and 1 1/2" pipe

Where the 3" channel runs length wise is where the upper plate of the hinge is attached.
