    Hot tap burning rail car.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/nation...caJ_story.html

Welding a hot tap to a burning tank car is interesting. Probably less risk since it's already on fire, but still takes skill and big yarbles.

I wonder how much they pay that poor welder.

Well I guess if you "buy the farm",your family will get the "big check"
Just my opinion, not from a book, just from the road.

Check out this DOT document that describes the procedure.

    http://www.fra.dot.gov/downloads/Research/ord9227.pdf

From page 156 - Set Up the Hot Tap Operation

    1. Hold a safety briefing
    2. Locate a willing ASME welder certified in the 6G position

I didn't go through the whole DOT pdf file in detail but the event was local to our area.

The tanker was double-walled so the welding would have been "safer" if that is possible.

Weldors could only work for 30 minutes because of the heat.

The tank was found to have less propane than thought so it was left to burn out.

The videos of exploding tank cars to show what could happen confirms the danger of the job.

It would seem the weldor would have received a little boost in the pay scale for that kind of work. Pay enough and someone will do it.

This is where you talk about how dangerous it is and you have to be bat-sh*t crazy to do work.

All I gotta say is WOW!!! Hot tap a burning tank car of propane?, I'd like to know who came up with that idea... As a highly trained, experienced and certified "water squirter" & haz-mat tech only one thing comes to mind when I hear anything causing potential flame impingement on a propane cylinder/tank of any size - BLEVE Those ain't cool lol
