    Inventor of Wendys Pancake Hood

hey every one this blew me away i was on the miller welding forum and ran accross this post

" The "inventor" was George Gilchrist of Gillette Wyoming, shortly after WWII when everything including welding hoods were in short supply.
George signed his pancakes with an engraving tool under the face piece.
For what it's worth he died in the mid-90's."

I didn't know Gillette was good for any thing till I read that. pretty cool i live somewhere where something cool was invented.

I prefer a pancake when welding in sunlight. In a shop, I prefer my tiger hood.

Pipeliners like to wear them, good for making tie ins laying in a ditch line. Face piece fits up close on your face to block out sunlight so you can see what you are doing. Ever welded outside and had the sun blind you from the reflection in your lens?

Yup. Pipe guys swear by them. You can even put auto dark lenses in them now.

I have two Fibre Metal helmets over 50 years old. They do the trick for me

I have a half dozen hoods (and LOTS of pictures). Don't know if my siblings would be up for selling one, but I'll ask. They're collector's items for sure. I also have lots of replacements parts, which I'd be happy to sell/send people who still own one.

Re: Inventor of Wendys Pancake Hood

I believe that the pancake was around before WWII as I have seen old pictures of welders in the ship yards wearing a large pancake and also some with the side shields .But they were about twice the diameter of the wendys and sarges
