Re: Good thing about old shops

I will get on that tomorrow for you. You know I really would be happy to load the whole truck up for you for free. Unfortunately I cut the frame right behind the cab when I was about 12 to make a trailer, so it will fit on a small trailer for you....engine is still in it....

Cleaning out the shop this morning a little and got deep into Grandaddy's welding cabinet....Enjoy!

"For direct current welders only. Will not work on A.C. cracker boxes"....which was the only thing he ever had.

Still using these. Burned some with the Lincoln SW 200, but it takes some skill.

Was the "Farm and Home" welder still there? Is that what your Grandpa used? The You Tube video about those welders is neat. Makes me think of more innocent days in our country

Oh yes Sparkie, we still have the welder. I ran it a rod or two with it a year ago or so. I am about to take it out of the shop and and put it somewhere until I can restore it a little bit.

Great. I've been looking for one to put in my man cave. I have a 1950 Hobart I restored. I also want a Lincoln AC180K for there also

That is one of those things that has surely passed the test of time. I learned on it and it served our farm welding needs for over 50 years. I have a lot of admiration for that. Time to clean her up and put her out to at least a more comfortable pasture. I will get you a picture if I get over to the shop today.

Great. I love old welders and have restored several. My pride and joy is a 1966 Lincoln Redface barn find I restored a few years ago. I often wonder if they could talk the stories they could tell.

I very much agree. I am looking for that SA-200 or any other barn find. Unfortunately with the high scrap prices a few years ago we lost a lot of that in my area. Many older tractors, trucks and machinery were lost. We do not not hardly have any junkyards around anymore either.

I have been looking for a good 3 phase torpedo around somewhere. I have a friend that has one in his shop. You just cannot beat how those old machines run. I will be surprised if what we are making now will have near the longevity.

It adds a nice touch. I've got a Gulf Dealer sign similar to yours hanging inside the wood shop.

Scsmith42- we have three or four others somewhere around here and they are not Gulf either. I seem to remember that we have a Texaco and will have to see what else.

Sparkie- been having some livestock trouble this weekend, but managed to get you a couple pictures. It is still in its (t)rusty table for now.

It was not until I was 14 or 15 that I found out that not all welders had that special replaceable ground lead insulation. I have never seen it give any trouble. Be nice to see what it looks like sitting up in the next few weeks.

It appears those have painted on labeling. You might try some purple power or a magic eraser on it to see if they can be brought back to life without ruining them. They old Hobart I did had removable metal labels that were in good shape to start with.

I guess mine was not a stylish enough model for metal labels. I believe all the original paint is on mine with the addition of my grandfather's added interpretations also. I probably we keep those for nostalgia. Been thinking about maybe gently cleaning it and maybe clear coating it depending on the cleaning results. Knowing all the other things that go on around here, that might happen or my boy might have to do it.
