7/8" fender washer & 1.25" black pipe for closet clothes rod hanger end cap brackets.

So my home was built in 2003 with cheap plastic short cut materials that dont hold up long or with heavy loads. Since at least two of these plastic end caps have broken already I decided to make my own. Lowes wants about $6.00 for each kit pictured. I can make about 6 caps or 3 kits for the price of one.

Hi Tony, are you talking about schedule 40 black pipe ??? Pressure rated pipe goes by the ID and not the OD. In your case IF you use schedule 40 Black 1'' pipe it is 1 5/16 or less than 1 3/8'' OD but 1'' ID. . 1'' black pipe or 1'' galvanized is PERFECT for clothes hangers.

Your pictures just loaded . For the END supports , I used 3/4'' x 3'' plywood and holesawed a 1 3/8'' hole for the pipe and screwed to wall . The 1'' pipe fits perfect. The length of the plywood will depend on where your studs are for mounting.

Thank you Bob I bought the pipe with the classification of one and a quarter inch it is black pipe and the clothes hanger fits in with a little play I looked up the one-inch pipe and it's too tight for the hanger rod.

Well I grabbed a 1" pipe and the rod would not fit. I think the rod may not be perfectly round. I am going to have to redo the friggin shelf. It is coming apart at the shelf. Not built to hold any significant amount of weight.

Here is my ugly end cap.

I drilled the holes by hand with a hss center drill. One of the holes wondered off course a little. This is how I layed it out and marked it for drilling. I drew a circle around the pipe on the washer drew a line through the middle of the washer. Then I removed the pipe and center punched the washer before drilling. No pictures of that part. I just wanted to get it done. Welded it up after drilling the holes.

I know things are different in Calfornia but here in the USA , wood, plastic , and old time steel hangers will fit on 1" galvanized or black schedule 40 pipe

Here's a picture of what I did using plywood with hole . I made one for each end , slide on pipe , raise ,and
    and secure to studs.

Re: 7/8" fender washer & 1.25" black pipe for closet clothes rod hanger end cap brack

Sorry I was not explaing it properly. The wooden rod does not fit inside of the 1" pipe so I used 1.25" pipe to make heavy duty end caps for the wooden rod. I was not buying a long length of 1" or 1.25" pipe to span the length of the walk in closet. I am fixing the end caps and repairing the rod with wood glue where it broke. Harder for me to explain it. The rod broke where it was previously factory glued.

Skip that round wood shlt and buy the REAL 1" pipe. Buy it once and it will outlive you.

Sorry I did not think to use metal Rod. The closet spans about 11' 4". Did not think buying a metal rod to span that length would be cheap and did not have room for it in the Camry even if I was to buy a new rod. I am fixing it as cheap and effective as possible. I don't know if I will keep this place much longer so I don't want to sink a lot of money into it. I may still have to beef up the brackets some how to support the weight of all the clothes the 11' rod plus shelf will carry.

This is how the walk in closet shelf and clothes hanger is built. Two end caps and 3 brackets to support the rod and shelf. Really cheap $hit. The rod is screwed into the brackets which are also screwed into the shelf and the wall.Name: 20170110_200850.jpg

I am probably going to remove the 3 brackets and weld cross pieces that fit between the curve for the rod and the down slope piece to the wall to beef up the brackets. Then sink some screws into the top parameter of the shelf along the wall.

It won't help, but what you have is the typical setup. My daughter bought a condo , spent $$$$$ on it , and after a year, I had to redo the same thing . I did it like mine and used the existing center support which did fit the pipe.

I know it is cheap quality and craftsmanship. I would like to avoid painting the walls and shelf if possible. Don't want clothes all over the place waiting for paint to dry and don't want to smell paint drying in the bedroom either. I think I can add a few brackets to stiffen it up and keep the shelf against the wall which is one of the reasons this happened. The shelf is pulling away from the wall.

So I found a place near me that sells the 1" galvenized in a 21' length for less than $23.00. First place I called. They charge $2.00 per cut. So roughly $25.00 OTD. Gonna put in some more calls to see if any one can beat that price. Black pipe was just over $18.00 for 21'

found another shop a few miles farther up the road that will let me bring my own portaband so I don't have to pay extra for a cut and wants $1.10 a foot. It's a wash either way pay a little more and no hwy or cut my self and transport it over hwy 99.

Black pipe is cheaper. Will black pipe stain my hands or clothes if they touch it. What would be the best way to treat it to avoid getting hands and clothes dirty.

No because most black pipe has a wax type coating on it to protect it from rust. Wipe it down with a solvent soaked rag if concerned.
