    Alum mig 187

I was wanting to see if anyone is running a 187 or any MIG with a plastic liner doing aluminum? I have a oil pan about 1/4 inch thats cracked and i need to weld it. I dont have a TIG or know anyone with a TIG so i was going to use my 187. I know you can do it but i just wanted to know if you can get good results. Im sure ill have to preheat it alittle with it being 1/4 cast aluminum. Post some pics!

If you have oxy acetylene, braze it.

Forget it. Cast alum ? You'll play hell getting it clean enough and you'll wish you never put that roll of AL in that Hobart..LOL.
Its a byatch. Snatch the oan, get it tanked and bead blasted inside and go get it tigged.Any motorcycle shop will know a tig guy and a tank guy to clean that pan up. They very well may have it in house ( Harley guys) Or buy a damn steel oil pan (if available).

In that case. GO FOR IT. It's quite an experience. You want that whip as straight as you can get it heading towards the part.Like a pool stick !Get to roller tension just right ....light squeeze--magnifying glass as the wire leaves the roller and enters the whip.
    Then.
    Pray.
    Twice.
Now. After that , if you enjoy pain enough to try again....... call HTP to make you a teflon lined 6 foot whip and have a go at it one more time !
Pull the pan, go to the post office, and send it out

You already have a bottle of Argon?

That is going to add to the cost of this experience too.

For the record. Idid/ tried to run AL through a Lincoln 180C about 5 years ago.I managed to do about 15 window frames with about 12 bird nests and 1/2 a dozen tips and then ordered a spool gun.....that I tried out and never used again.I sold that machine to the guy I was doing these window frames for and he put a 5-6 foot custom whip on it and used it for quite some time. He liked that better than the spool gun.I never got a chance to run it with the custom whip. A couple years later he dumped that whole rig and now runs a Square Wave(as we should have done day one)
