Normally I don't like to have the guard on my 4.5" grinder but if I was going to be using one of these on it I'd definetly take the time to re-install it.

About 6 weeks back I was using a cutoff wheel on an angle grinder to notch some 1/4 plate when I hit a kickback zone, the grinder kicked down & into my right thigh, the damage cost me a pair of jeans and a minor flesh wound, I'm convinced that had I been using a guard it would have been much worse due to the angle the grinder hit my leg. I think it would have levered the wheel INTO my leg much like the bucking teeth on a chainsaw.I normally try to leave he guards on, but as we all know, sometimes it's just not practical and we have to take increased risks.

I agree, never use guards. And like Traditional Japanese woodworkers, sit on the floor. Soon, the Darwin theory will be proven. You will take yourself out of the gene pool by severing either an artery, or something you'd need to be a sperm donor.
