How to get notified of any new thread?

When I post a new thread, people obviously notice it appearing and reply.

How is it that people get notified of a new thread in a particular sub forum or all sub forums? I can't believe people are glued to this site and doing it manually. I'd like to at least hear about all the issues people post about as a learning tool. At some point I may even be able to help IF I knew the thread existed.

It's in your settings like any other message board.

The problem is, (for me at least) It NEVER works properly.

you get random notifications sometimes a week late.

    it's a joke.

I unsubscribed from all threads and no longer bother with it.

the only notifications I get are through tapatalk.
    works 1000% better.

You can adjust your thread subscription settings in your userCP here: http://weldingweb.com/usercp.php

you can also subscribe to any forum using the forum tools drop down in every forum. Unlike suggested above notifications work flawlessly and are typically instant.

It's been my experience that they DO NOT work properly.
as a matter of fact, there has been plenty of others that have had the same problem over the years.

Much the same way the links on the top of the page bring you to the machinist site.

    completely screwy.

Thats ok, I get too many e mails anyway..

I'm actually unsubscribing to all threads on a few other forums also... for that reason.

    Tapatalk app works better IMO.

I gotta point at your provider in this instance. Everything on our end is different now that we are on AWS though.

Hit "quick links" then "today's posts"

For some reason, after the reset, if you hit "new posts" it won't show posts you've recently read or responded to.

At least on my end anyway.

MinnesotaDave: Also of note. Thank You

As a self taught semi skilled welder, I only visit this site to get answers to my questions; that's once every month or so. I started this thread to get a constant supply of other peoples questions so I could follow along on the answers to the interesting ones. Sometimes just the question tells me I'm missing out because I would be too ignorant to ask it.

Subscribing to the forums of interest and getting emails is my preferred mechanism now, but maybe some day I'll be skilled enough to answer questions and then visit more often and use your and TimmyTIG's suggestions.

Re: How to get notified of any new thread?

    Robb M:

I hate to revive this dormant thread, but I subscribed to several forum categories and have never gotten a single notification of a new entry.

When inside a given forum category that I subscribed to, I see I am subscribed because it offer the option to unsubscribe. Inside a forum category I didn't subscribe to, it offer the option to subscribe. Clearly a difference.

Is there anything else I need to do to get notifications of new threads?

    hey Bill,

who is your email provider? We did just have an issue where no emails were being sent by the site at all from April 24 until yesterday afternoon. Let me know if you get a notification of this response please.

    cheers,
    robb

    Robb M:

My domains are hosted for email by (queue scary villainous music) Google. One of these days, I'll spin up my own email server as I have static IP's, but so far I just let Google's gmail handle it.

I have no notice of your email either in my inbox or the Spam folder.

Re: How to get notified of any new thread?

My inbox has the normal mail that's addressed to me as one subscribed to the THREAD. I have never gotten a notice of any sort (in box or SPAM) of a thread posted to one of the FORUMS I subscribed to.

I suspect there's a good deal of traffic on this site, so I SHOULD see a notice of new threads or replies sent to the Forums I subscribed to some time today or tomorrow. I'll let you know.

BTW - I just got notified that Bonzoo replied to a very old thread I started and the interesting part is he had an attachment that displayed a photo. I tried attaching a photo yesterday and no matter what format I created and no matter how small I made it, I could never upload the image. I had to use an HTML link to the jpg at another site.

keep me posted. As I said, things were broken for a couple of weeks, but they are back up and running. I'm getting these ones within seconds of your posting.

Re: How to get notified of any new thread?

It's been several days, and I still haven't received a single notification of new threads in the forums I subscribed to.

If you check your email servers log, it should tell you if it sent any mail to my email address besides the obvious threads that I initiated.

Re: How to get notified of any new thread?

Unless I got searching for something, I always use the new posts button. I am experiencing similar problems to what Minnesotadave described. Getting kind of tired of marking all forums read to clear things out. Didn't have to do that before. Before it would only show posts since my last visit. I liked that. Only a handful to sort through that way. Now it has the annoying "these threads have not been updated since your last visit, but contain unread posts". Yeah, I don't care about them. That's why I didn't read them the last time.
