    D ring support

Hi there - I have a dump trailer that needs D rings welded. I want to weld them on to the sides in the rear so they don't interfere with a load of aggregate but have enough strength to hold a compact tractor.
The sides are 2x4 1/8" post with 12 gauge sheeting.

Question is should I simply weld on a 1/2" D ring right to the 12 gauge sheet at the inside of the post?
Or should there be some other backer plate? Or should I possibly drill a hole and weld in a tube through the 2x4 to tie it all in?

Just worried that it may try to rip the 12 gauge sheet away from the post.

    Thanks

I would weld the D-rings to a plate, then use another plate, so you can sandwich the 12-GA sheet metal. Use 4-bolts to tie the two plates together.

As stated above. Bolt on " D" rings and backup behind.

That kicked loose a random memory rattling around my head from the 80's.....

When sandwiching plates on thin metal, the plates should be different sizes to help eliminate the shearing effect (like a scissors).

This was from theory of installing bolted plates for roll bars on mud trucks back then.

It could have been wrong, or could have changed by now

Anyone know of similar from a modern reference?

I wanted to put it right at a post so it would be difficult to get a plate behind unless I fish it down the post somehow.

I added D-rings to my dump trailer. It came with 4 D-rings on the corners. I used bolt on D-rings in the stake pockets.

Hey now, bolting stuff on is a termination type offense on a welding website

We'll have to bust CEP back down to a no-stripe recruit in basic training for even suggesting it

I can’t imagine CEP wanting to run any of his pristine engine drives for a mere D ring job. Lol
