Another Set Of Murphy Switchgauges In An SA200

Revived this unit some time ago for its young owner after Harvey flood waters got to her. He's been using it to practice and is getting ready to mount it on the welding rig he recently acquired and asked me to install Murphy switchgauges on it.

The 1/2" pipe plug in the normal spot in the head where the capillary bulb goes was froze in as usual and I would have broken another 3/8" Allen socket if I wanted to in an attempt to get it out. So grabbed a stick of 6011, fired her up and filled the female hex plug up before stabbing on a 1" hex nut. Screwed it out with my fingers!

Didn't want to disturb the OP switch and wiring on the starter side so I used the 1/8" main galley plug behind the air cleaner as I have in the past on occasion. However, that male square headed plug wouldn't budge either, rounded off and still wouldn't come out after beating a socket on what was left. So, fire it up again, grab a 7/16" hex nut and remaining piece of 6011 and out it came with a small adjustable wrench.

Mounted the gauges high on the panel so if the owner builds a lead or remote cord holder off the exciter housing as some have he can still see them. This location also lets the grounding lead from the gauges still reach the mag side of the IGN switch.

Looks like he could have used a new ammeter as well?

Good eye. I wondered if someone would pick up on that.

Actually, I replaced it with a good used one I had in my toolbox. Also had to replace the remote voltage regulator with a new one for the battery charging alternator as his original (that went under water) had died.

Talked to him about someday adding a remote to the unit when he and his Dad picked it up yesterday. Told him by noon of the first day welding with it w/o a remote and he'd wished he had one. Indicated that was likely going to be his next big purchase for the machine but he does have a few things to take care of on the rig truck first.
