    Miller 12vs .052 flux wire

I’m going to look at buying a used 12vs extreme rigged up currently for .052 flux core wire. I’m going to try it off my 305g. What settings should I try? Also, I’ll be testing it in a scrap piece of 4” channel. How many amps should I try it at? I’ve ran several pounds of wire before. Mostly .30, .35, and .45. Never ran .052, so I was looking for a starting point. Thanks.

Who ever makes your .052 wire should have setup specs on their web site. I run .045 flux core in my 12vs. I run Hobart 21B most of the time. I run around 18-19V and about 160 ipm with it unless I am on real thin material then I go to 17V and around 120IPM. I would guess you are going to be in the 18-21V range and 100 to 150 IPM but that is only a guess. Make sure to switch polarity to run the flux core.

FYI ; Some flux core wire is moisture sensative and if it is old wire it might not run well no matter what. That is one reason I run the H21B it does not seem to be effected by moisture very much. I am running a 30 lb roll in it now that is about a year old and runs fine.

When in doubt with fluxcore... start with the wire speed high and turn it down to get a smooth arc. It will save a ton of tips ruined from burn back.
I haven't used my 12VS for a few months, but it seems to me that on CV the wire speed control is kind of backwards, meaning more wire for a lower voltage setting. And the manual was absolutely zero help, 33 pages of safety warnings but it really never tells you how to use it.

Re: Miller 12vs .052 flux wire

Bought it for $525. The 12vs has a 400 amp Profax Mig gun, running ESAB dual shield 2 70t-12h4. Has .045 rollers too. Ran it for a few minutes without gas just to see if it was welding. Ran pretty good, except for the porosity on starts and stops. But I’m sure that’s because the lack of shielding gas. Going to try running a 75/25 mix tomorrow. What would be a good flux gun to buy? I’m thinking about getting a 300amp since neither of my 3 machines will put out more than around 300 amps. I will be running a 305g, miller big 20, or a Bobcat 225. I mainly run weld on 3/8-3/4 steel. Any suggestions? What’s a good wire to run? I use Hobart .035 Mig wire on the 110 machine with good luck.

When I bought the Trailblazer 302, I asked everyone about a Suitcase -- VS or RC. Although the VS will work on the 302, every opinion I got was to buy the RC.

Disadvantage - it uses a Remote Control cable.

Advantage - Wire feeding is more consistent, even at low voltages

The 12RC combined with the 302 will amaze you with its smoothness. You may want to try one before you buy the VS.

nothing wrong with a 12vs at all. I run mine on a TB302 and have never had a problem.

12vs will work fine for you. I use an LN-25, but that's only because I happened across it for a good price.

As for self-shielded wire, I use Lincoln NR-232 or Esab Coreshield 8/Lincoln Nr-233. 062-078(5/64) diameter wires. Runs somewhere north of 200 amperage wise @ ~20v and ~120 ipm.

Be advised there is a bit of a learning curve with those T-8 wires I mentioned. Once you've got it figured out it's one of the fastest ways to weld 3/8"+ metal out in the field.

Re: Miller 12vs .052 flux wire

Actually had some time to fool with it. Got the .052 Esab dualshield to run great. But only in a flat position. I didn’t have the hardware to run .030 solid wire, but I have it a try anyway. It actually fed really well and ran like a champ. I’m ordering the right consumables and .045 solid Mig wire so I can get more time on it. I’m really impressed with the 305g’s mg capabilities.

Re: Miller 12vs .052 flux wire

I have both the 12 RC which i bought first and yes it is better at somethings like what i used it for at the time which was body work and other mig type work
running the .030 and .035 wire and into .045 stuff using it for spray it does a great job

But eventually i had to cut the cord which was never long enough to do somethings
Bought the 12 VS so i could do the other things i needed to do on heavy equipment and other install type work that took me to over 75 ft length of the RC control cable

On equipment repair work i run a lot of Lincoln outershield 71-m and elite in .045 and .062 and for the real big stuff i run the esab core shield 8 in 0.72 self shield wire
The 12 VS works just fine for all i do now the 12 RC is just a dust collector now ..Because seriously dragging all that cable around is a drag and i don't do body work anymore
Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me

It ran well on the 305g in cv mode, but it ran exceptionally well on my big 20 in cc mode. Bought the right tips today, ordered .045 er70s-6, .045 tweeco tips, and the right rollers. I’ll be set soon. Thanks for the help.

What’s a good alternative to the Bernard duraflux gun the 12vs is sold with?
