ie earth clamp on rod holder side and vice versa.
in theory should work but must be good reason.
and don't want to just say cos that's how it says it should be done would like to give him proper explanation.

If it's an AC only welder it doesn't make any difference. An AC/DC set on DC or DC only welder some rods only weld well with a particular polarity.

We want most of the heat at the end of the rod for most DC stick processes. Electrons flow the direction of most of the heat. The rod tip either liquefies, or vaporizes. The exponential expansion of steel as it converts, along with vaporization of flux causes a jetting action blasting metal, and gas at the joint.

In thin steel with tight fit up using 6013 you might prefer DC straight polarity or DCEN, or DC-. This gives slower deposition.

If it's a DC machine, you can point out the DCEP/DCEN switch and tell him that the switch effectively does that for you without having to change the position of the leads. If you change the leads to the way he was asking about, then the DCEP/DCEN switch will become a DCEN/DCEP switch because the label is now in a reverse configuration. One post is positive and the other is negative, flip the switch and the first one is now negative and the other is positive. That should be a simple enough explanation of it for him to understand(maybe).
