I used stainless nuts. no coating, decent strength, don't rust, easy to find, nice and shiney when you are done brushing them. They aren't cheap, but neither is my time taking coating off.

Can't say I ever recall my nuts turning white when I welded but I do recall a few times in iffy situations where the little buggers tried to crawl back up inside me to keep themselves out of harms way.

I am really disappointed that this thread did not go sideways, or downhill. Maybe the door was left too far open.

Yep, a perfectly good thread gone down the tube.

At least the OP now knows 1 reason why his nuts turned white.

I have never sweated the electroplated zinc (whatever) Now, the hot dipped stuff is another story, on pipe I'll get out the torch & heat/melt & brush it off or use a sanding disk to remove, it seems to load up grinding stones the way aluminium does.

Yep... and they even have other shapes that make welding easier
    https://www.mcmaster.com/#weld-nuts/

For regular nuts just look for the ones that say "steel" instead of "zinc-plated"
For example 1/2-13 grade 5 would be one I commonly use. https://www.mcmaster.com/#95505a605

From a google search I found the grade 8 tempering temperature to be 800F. Your just welded nut that's red-hot will definitely exceed this. So the fastener will be softer (and have lower yield strength) than it did originally. So there's no point in buying expensive fasteners that you're just going to ruin anyway.

Your local DG Hardware should carry uncoated steel nuts, unless you nut then by the box load.
    At least ours does anyways.
