Yes. It's the zinc coating burning off from being welded. I stock heavy duty non plated nuts for situations where I need to weld them.

is the zinc coating also whats causing the welds to bubble? or is that something else. can you purchase none plated bolts anywhere?

Yup maybe galvanized or zinc coating. Just wire brush when done and if you plan on welding a lot of them then use s respirator or look for non coated nuts 🥜

I believe that's the zinc coming to the surface, I'd be careful welding any kind of plated our galvanized nuts or bolts.
I would recommend a respirator and ventilation if you're going to a lot, you don't want to get the fume flu.

Either hold your breath, ventilate well or grind it off. While zinc is an important nutrient in green vegetables, breathing it in can be bad for you.

I wish it were easier to find plain steel nuts/bolts when I find myself grinding nuts or bolts. Sometimes I will get stainless fasteners if applicable.

Don't breathe the fumes! When welding outside, I just stand upwind.

It's possible for the zinc to cause minor contamination but more likely, the bubbling is related to poor shielding, over/under heating the base metal and other weld problems.

I order mine from Fastenal. And yes the porosity is coming from welding the galvanized plating. When I do weld them I just burn them hot and typically don't have a problem. Keep in mind if you're going to weld all the way around a nut or bolt don't use grade 8. They have enough carbon in them they'll often crack. You can get by with welding one flat on them tho. I generally always use grade 5 hardware unless it's a special situation.

    Good luck!

Very minimal unless you're in a very confined area with your head very close to the weld/smoke. I've welded a lot of nuts with no issues. But not in a very air tight area. If I have a lot of galv to weld I do it outside or with my smoke-eater and use fluxcore. Fluxcore (on DCEN) welds galv very well even without grinding it off prior to welding. Old timers always swore to drink a bunch of milk to counteract the effects of it. I've found Busch Light to work for me

Probably won't get sick, you need to clean the coating off if you are going to tig weld though. Drop some nuts into acid for a while then wash them off and you are ready to weld.

I’ve welded tons of galvanized steel. Never got sick from welding, burning with a torch. I’ve been poisoned 12 different times.
Here is some good reading on welding galvanized steel.

"No long term effects" ... well, except death. Is death "long term"?

Don't mean to make more of it than it is ... I've welded plenty of galvanized stuff too ... but definitely try to stay upwind and out of the smoke. Enough of it will kill you. And if, instead of zinc, it's it's cadmium plating (which can be mistaken for zinc electroplating) it doesn't take much to kill you from what I gather...

I'd be more concerned about the everyday welding fumes.

Yep, me also! Try welding some aluminum for long periods of time and see what accumilates on your welding hood lense!

I weld galvanized tube all day at work. Wear a 3M half mask. No need to overreact to a little zinc. Now the zinc applied to patch up a Hot dip job after welding is nasty stuff... Zinc rod applied with an Oxy acetylene torch. Luckily we seldom use that at work. CEP should remember how much that stuff stinks from his pile driving days.

Amazing how much galvanized steel you deal with, when working marine construction.

Agreed- a Cheap ($20) 3M half mask does wonders for most of this. It only filters out nuisance level vapors, but it filters almost all solids/particles, so like the flux/steel/aluminum/dust/everything else that is put in the air while welding, grinding, and cutting. With the new grey/white filters (low restriction with the same 99.9% filtration) they have, they're easy to breathe through and you know you aren't breathing all that crap in.

I got a 6502QL, which has a downward facing "exhaust" valve to direct your exhales down and away from your glasses/lenses so they don't steam up (VERY much appreciated). Also has a quick release latch so you can quickly pull the lever up and lower it off your face a bit to talk to people/breathe normally when not doing anything. Quick pull down reseals the mask to your face and back to work. Most importantly, it fits under a welding hood.

The Medium is designed to fit 80% of the population (with the small covering the bottom 10% and the large the top 10%) so that's the size for almost everyone unless you are abnormally large/small. $17 on amazon right now + a few bucks for each set of disposable filters. Well worth the investment for your health.

The upgraded Silicon half mask is a huge improvement in comfort. They are about $10 more than the grey plastic ones. ArcZone and Northern Safety have them.

Didn't read entire post but mcmaster is an easy place to get uncoated nuts from.

In times of imminent need, I drop zinc coated nuts in some HCL acid and neutralize in baking soda water.

I weld it all the time doing precast panels and parking garages. Everything is either galvanized or stainless. Wearing a respirator helps. As I say at work; You can taste the difference!

Muriatic acid douche for about 5 mins - all gone, no nasties, no smoke, beautiful weld.
