Going to look at a lincoln need tips

Im going to look at a lincoln welder and I beleive its an sa200 but the owner doesnt know. They sent pics of the side and it has a f163 engine. Appears to be in clean shape. They dont know anything about it and asking $4500

Whats should I look for to determine value as far as model and type? I dont know anything about sa200 vs sa250 or red face black face etc. Also dont know which year models are good.

Should I just try to fire it up? Should I take ether and jumper cables? If it looks good and clean but wont start I might takr a gamble on it. Any tips alpreciated. Name: image.jpeg

If it's mostly original, It's an SA 200 Redface (Round Generator Barrel) with upgraded electronic Idler and the alternator conversion.
If it's not running and welding, it might not be worth any $4500.00

What is your location? If you’re in the Mid West, SA-200s sell very high! Here on the west coast not so much. I paid $250.00 for a 1948 Short Hood, and $200.00 for a 1966 Red Face.

well with any piece of engine driven equipment, hopefully you bought it cheap enough so if it needs major repairs its still worth it in the end...starting it may be the first of many repairs as you dont know if it even welds...good luck with it..

I noticed that the control panel has a murphy coolant and oil pressure gauge. If the buttons aren't reset, it won't let it start, unless there's something else going on. When it's turning over, what kind of oil pressure are you getting?

By the looks of it and the modifications it had and the way it turned over I assume it will run with not much work. Everything looked really clean and disnt notice any leaks. Oil pressure gauge jumped up to the middle when it was turning over. Nice older couple said it was their sons. They had a receipt where he had paid $6,000 somewhere last year.

I didnt know what a murphy gauge was. I will see what I need to do to reset it. I appreciate the tips. Ill post up how it goes and see if anyone else can tell me what I dont know about the machine. Thanks a ton for the tips already thrown out. It would have taken me forever to learn that.

If the oil pressure went to the middle of the range, it's not the murphy gauge... depending on how its wired to short the mag. I would disconnect the stop wire on the mag and see if it will start. have a jumper wire to ground it to stop the engine if it does run.
Oh, BTW that's a nice looking machine.

Check to see if the spark plugs are getting fire, If they are, then it's probably a fuel problem.

Found out the son passed away. Gas tank was almost empty so I stopped and put some gas in it trying to fire it off but no luck Just picked it up. Going to look it over better when I get back to the shop. I can see gas filling up the bowl and going on to the filter so it seems like it's getting gas

Absolutely. It came with some leads and a nice pipeliner electrode holder. Im really glad it fired up and welds good with no issues. Really thought I might have to have it tuned up to get it working but its great. It puked a small amount of coolant out the overflow tube. Not sure if the cap is froze up or if it was overfilled or what. I ran it for about 30min and it dis not get abover 190. Mainly hovered at 170-180.

I should probably check the oil.

Story was that he paid $6,000 for it in 2017, Im assuming from a place that did all this work to it to get it pipeline ready perhaps.

Anything else I should check on it?

Good find great looking welder! Looks like the gentleman who owned it before you took care of it. Looks like it was set up for a rig

I say we all tip one in honor of the last owner... For what ever reason he didn't get any return on his investment.
