Cincinnati Lathe Change Gear box Input Shaft

New Cincinnati puzzle - Input shaft to Change gear Box. Noticed drive gear had a wobble and found this. Shaft is soft gear hard 3/4"shaft was thinking finish taper on both halves set in centers in a jig and Mig weld (do not have tig)? Would appreciate input on procedure. Shaft not available and not trying to build new. BobName: Change Gear Shaft.JPG

How does it look when it's in the proper orientation ie. together?

And, do both halves spin in relation to each other when working properly?

Was 5 1/4" straight shaft with 2 pressed on gears. Someone did poor weld that did not hold up. Set up in Lathe and turned till it feel apart. Still have previous welders 3/16 " centering pin to work with.

Looks like some past fix a broken shaft using a roll pin
Odds are they low carbon welding rod and did not hold up
IF had this fix I would weld on a steel bar on the right side with the gear and machine the left end of shaft using some like 1140 or (4140 may need to be heat treated )

Bevel it, weld it. But make sure the shaft is as straight as possible. Runout will trash any bearings you run it in, if it's not straight.

Set it up on v blocks for tacking, then weld it while it's held between centers in your lathe so you can do a circular bead...like a weld positioner. That'll help to keep warping to a minimum. I'd check runout immediately after tacking so it can be corrected if need be.

Get it back running, and you can search for a replacement somewhere.

And, make sure it's weldable...........you're sure it isn't hardened steel.

Yeah, that's a better approach.........you'd maintain concentricity that way, instead of hoping the weld was straight on the shaft as it sits right now

go 1/4 oversize in weld-on bar, and you could maintain a nice shaft runout when you machine it back to size.

Finished - Set up between centers rotated and continuous weld - machines to .005. Found a good shaft for future if I need to fabricate from gear out. Thanks all for advise. BobName: Change Gear.JPG

Glad that turned out. Old stuff is hard to find replacement parts for.
