Seattle Smitty: Many years ago when I was a lad, J. R. Williams had a book of Cowboy cartoons as well. I believe it is still over at the ranch. If me memory serves me correctly, there was a There was a black bird in each picture somewhere OR a pair of eyes fitted into the picture somewhere. I know there were two cartoonists that did those. One did the eyes, one did the Bird. It's Been many many years since I saw those, but they were really good.

Re: Cartoon - just for kicks

How do I know if Im breaking the copyright law and will they come after me?
For example; Lincoln Electric has a definition in one of there books on how load limits are determined (mass/inertia) . If I scan and paste it to a relevant thread, will the Lincoln police come after me? I would think that Lincoln would appreciate that I own their book and discuss it on this forum but, how would I get permission?
Is there a loophole like, just retype what they said?

Check with Lincoln and see if they give permission to "reuse" any of their content. In some of their printed material (books and such) there are statements on how and if anyone can use their printed information (as in most printed books and journals). If you dont want to go through all that trouble, you may be able to quote their material, but make sure you credit them for the info. Otherwise paraphase the material in your own words. If you are really concerned, dont copy and paste any one's material in any way, shape or form.

It would not behoove a company to take lawful action against their customers who are not profiting from the copyright infringement or causing a loss of value to the owner of that copyright.

A guy reposting information in brief is not worth the trouble. Especially if you cite the reference and give credit to the copyrighted material.

Could they go after you? probably. But I doubt they would considering the context of this site and your intentions.

But Disney goes after a lot of people. The King of The Hill franchise went after a local propane company that had a picture of Hank Hill in their shop. Dumb. But the shop was for-profit. I guess I can see it. But it really does promote the original source and is a nod of approval from the public. Go figure.
