Welding skid with Cargo Slide

Hello everyone.

I just tossed together my new skid and figured I would post a few pictures.

When I was looking for ideas, this site helped me a fair deal, so I'll try to return the favour.

I kept it simple and what I think is relatively clean and organized.

I bought a skid from a fellow down South (Calgary), just for the machine, boxes, reel tree, etc.

In my opinion, the skid itself was complete garbage and a piss poor excuse of an attempt. SO, I had to build a new one.

All I had with me for a camera was my phone, but I will take some pictures with a REAL camera tomorrow.

This is the skid I bought.

48" box.

36" box. I cut that terrible excuse for a grinder rack out and repainted.

Flimsy tailgate.

I went ahead and sourced a used "Cargo Bed" good for 2000lbs from a guy in Grande Prairie.

Re: Welding skid with Cargo Slide

I cranked out three bottle holders for my bottle rack. 8" SCH 40 316L cut into thirds

One before I headed to the shop.

Nothing to see here.

A hammer and a measuring tape.

Tacked and set in place to confirm measurements.

You can always count on good friends to help out with things.

Machine bolted to the slide.

Box holder-mabobbers in place.

Re: Welding skid with Cargo Slide

Tailgate frame mocked up.

Pipe stands, levels and a forklift. It ended up square.

A very large air brake in the making.

A means of securing the air brake. Also, the reel tree pad.

It ended up being quite light. The three chunks of 3" std. wt. channel make up the bottle rack. I know it looks like I measured once and cut twice, but the short one int he group is for Mr. Acetylene.

Re: Welding skid with Cargo Slide

I needed a third hand to push the skin snug against the frame.

Closer, but something was still missing...

Dropping the machine in by myself proved to be a BREEZE with the flexibility of the slide.

Hooking up the basics.

This truck will be a hit at tailgate parties.

Almost a full shot, minus the feed frame in the way.

After getting a few winks and seeing it in the morning.

Back through the Rockies.

Re: Welding skid with Cargo Slide

the very vulnerable DEF (diesel exaust fluid) tank. WARNING a stock height crew cab long bed 4x4 will not make it off a step deck trailer without splitting that tank in half and pizzing out all of the DEF

Re: Welding skid with Cargo Slide

Awesome nice job.

I will say, I'm just a little confused. Why the large (air dam) tail gate? Is that to provide a large horizontal work table when the tail gate is opened? or is that a loading ramp for when the welder is left at the shop? I'm not clear on what purpose all that work serves.

It does look good though.

Thank you.

The big tailgate is, like you guessed, to provide a large, flat working surface. If I were rolling out 6" spools all day off the back off my truck, I would have built a much smaller tailgate. Hahaha.

If you find the pipe and the chain laying around, toss a set together.

Yeah, I didn't think that one through.

Thank you, Martini.

Where in Canada are you located?

Re: Welding skid with Cargo Slide

Joker: hehe you sure don't see 316 in that size very often unless you're working on pretty specific applications; we do a ton of superheaters, boilers and drums at work and I've never seen us use anything that big yet I'm in Onterrible right now (southwestern) and was raised and schooled here but had to move out east to NS for a year to get experience before I could get decent work here. It's been a long road but I've got a good gig right now so I'm going to stick here an develop some more then eventually head west as all the smart ones do You're out west right? Are you from there originally or?

Sounds like a nice job you have yourself. I always talk with the boilermakers at shutdowns and peak at what they are doing. I don't have a long enough attention span for GTAW overlay on boiler tubes.

I am in Alberia at le moment. I like it out here. I am originally from Beautiful British Columbia. That is what the license plates say, in case people didn't already know.

I liked the spirit level What on God's Green Earth you'd use it for??? But it was cool

Really nice way to put a lot of stuff in a really small footprint. You utilized the back of that truck to the fullest. Better than I could ever dream of.

Tight rig, dude. Next time I make a rack for my bottles, I'm using your bottle clamps as inspiration.

Thank you. Do it up! If you don't have the pipe handy, bend some 1/4" PL into the right shape.

Thank you, farmersamm. I hated that the skid I bought rendered the box useless when it was in there. With mine, I have lots of room between the rear of the machine and even more room to the right of the machine.
