help please

Lincoln Weldnpower 225 AC/DC welder with 6000 Watt generator -- powered by 16 hp Briggs and Stratton engine -- motor runs great but no power to welder - was told it needs new brushes -- good project machine - paid $2150.00 asking $350.00

is a comon problem and a cheep fix do you think its worth it or not.thanks jerry

Maybe repost in the lincoln product forum. If it is an alternator unit then the brushes are running on slip rings. You should get a flashlight and look in to inspect the commutator that the brushes run on. If it is a DC generator you will see many copper segments and if it is a alternator you will see two copper slip rings. If those copper surfaces are badly arced and look damaged you may need serious repairs to the rotor/armature. Replacing the brushes is a 30 minute job but if the problem is not brushes you are looking at big dollars.
I cannot help but wonder why the seller is not paying one to two hundred dollars for the parts and repair rather than selling so cheap. You have to put a lot up running hours on a machine to wear out the brushes.
If you can find the model and serial number you can download the owners manual and parts manual for that machine from Lincoln.

thanks for the info i need to find someone that knows about this before i go look at it. its only 30 miles from my house. if i could take them with me and it is just the brushes that would be a good buy. thanks again

maybe ask the owner where he came up with the idea that it needed brushes? he may have already had it looked at and is tired of dealing with it.

The 16HP Briggs could be worth that itself if it in fact "runs great". Check to see if there is electrical output at the receptacles too. If there is and no power to the welding leads then it is most likely something else. The brushes are where the electricity leaves the armature to go out for use by the user. If there is usable 120 V power at the receptacles then the brushes are OK and the problem is elsewhere.

Mine is a mid 80's runs great after the carb got a clean up. Lots can go wrong in the board and etc... but
mostly minor repairs will get it running. The 16 hp industrial B & S is surely worth that if it runs well. They do love gas by the way.

Go get it, hope Duane sees this post and can lead you to simple troubleshooting and go from there.
Value? not near $2150? but $500-$1000 depending on condition is a good ballpark.
