Spark Plugs

Just gave my Honda on my compressor a tune up(long over due). It ran fine before with a Champion plug in it, but I switched back to an NGK and it is a different animal. Just saying if it came with a specific brand keep it.

Re: Spark Plugs

Plug brands due make a difference for some reason or the other. Neighbor bought a tractor at an auction that was running rough, brought it home and kept feeding it AC plugs, would ever run right and he gave up on it. Dad kept telling him it would not run on AC plugs and to put a set of Champion plugs in it, he just refused the idea. Dad bought it from him, changed the plugs in his driveway and I drove it home, still running good to this day. Neighbor was a little pissed but was told several times what the problem was. Go figure!!

Re: Spark Plugs

The Kohler in my Gravely loves a Champion, I think the Honda prefers an NGK. The old 390 in my F-250 liked Motorcraft plugs and my Jeep liked Autolites.

Re: Spark Plugs

What is the difference in gap? Did you get the heat ranges cross-referenced properly? Is the reach correct? Projected tip or non-projected? Fine wire or no? Resistor or no? A lot of things go into a spark plug, more than just brand.

Re: Spark Plugs

My dakota likes the factory champion plugs, tried auto lite platnums and g3 plugs and it wouldn't hardly run. Why it makes a difference I don't know.

Re: Spark Plugs

NGK makes the best spark plugs period... everything I have runs NGK.

But if I fix a Dodge or a GM I put the OEM plugs in it... there products aren't up to NGK standards

Cannot get Champion plugs to last in mowing or small tractor applications.

Re: Spark Plugs

Im a mechanic at a honda dealership you wouldn't believe the amount of cars that come in having misfire problems and the customer says well i just changed the spark plugs it cant be that and low and behold all it needed was a set of OEM NGK plugs in it and it fixes there problem every time. the thing that gets me is NGK plugs are cheap so why dont people use the oem plug

Re: Spark Plugs

NGK doesn't market.... Ever see an NGK add or any frivolous claims from them?

The ignorant masses buy what marketers sell them, ie Bosch 4 prong and those silly octagon plugs. Meanwhile NGK doesn't bother with that bs and spends the money on building the best possible product that the informed consumers purchases instead.

Re: Spark Plugs

I have an Evinrude outboard used for waterskiing. It came with Champion QL 16 V plugs in it. Once I tried another plug listed as an alternative plug in the owners manual(Champion also). The first time I came up on a ski after change out, I could tell it wasn't pulling as good as the old plugs. I put the old ones back in and never bought the others again, even though they were a little cheaper. I only used the QL16 V after that.

Re: Spark Plugs

Years ago I had a Triumph TR-6 that burned oil like it was going out of style.

I mean it used almost as much oil as it did gasoline, really, for every tank of gas used it needed at least 2 quarts of oil.

Only way to keep it going good for more than a couple of hours was to use non foulers on all 6 cylinders, and go to a step hotter plug and open the gap a couple of thousandths over spec.

I started out with Champion plugs they lasted almost a week till they fouled.

Switched to Bosch platinum plugs, they didn't even last 2 days before fouling.

Stuck a set of NGK's in it and they lasted 6 months before fouling.

Of course eventually I ended up rebuilding the motor, but I still stayed with NGK's.

Now I stick with OE or swap to NGK if OE doesn't cut it.

Sometimes I still miss that car.

Re: Spark Plugs

Probably has a lot to do with the internal resistance of the plugs and how hot your ignition system are. Running stock ignitions Ive seen a lot difference between brands and have found that NGK or bosch seem to work the best. With high output ignitions (50kv+) I have seen much less difference between any of the brands, especially once you open up the plug gaps to take advantage of the hotter spark.

Re: Spark Plugs

My dsm made 452awhp on a mustang dyno and I would ONLY use a NGK, nothing else ever touched it.

My old camry I tried those E3 diamond fire plugs. My brother said they were crap and I should have listened. The car ran damn smooth but $30 for 4 plugs and they lasted MAYBE 5k miles at most before I got a misfire. Put in some other plugs, misfire went away and car ran fine. Never again.
