Re: Centerline Finally Does It!

How do you keep your flanges from warping? I usually weld on the inside but whenever I weld the outside it warps a little bit even if I go really slow. Do you deck or flat sand them after they are welded?...

Re: Centerline Finally Does It!

when welding them have them bolted down and if u cant weld them bolted down...then pull it off and weld it and bolt it down after welding a bit of it.

you can also deck them or sand them flat after welding is complete.

Re: Centerline Finally Does It!

Wow, nice work. I'm trying to learn stainless now and it's tough (for a newb). Question: are you back purging the collectors too or cleaning them up later? The tube looks thicker than the .065 I'm using - what kind of heat are you using? Again, nice work, it's inspiring.

Re: Centerline Finally Does It!

Question: On the recirc'd wastegate dump tube, any concerns about differing thermal expansion? I've seen places recommend flex pipes on the dump tube when recircing to prevent cracks at the joint with the exhaust.

sakurama: I'm sure he's back purging the collectors. Looks like schedule 10 maybe?
I'll be using schedule 10 304 when I build my turbo manifold....still trying to figure out how I will best backpurge it.

Re: Centerline Finally Does It!

on the dumps it deff is recommended to use a flex, but a lot of customer don't like the look of it. At the end of the day i do what the customer asks.

the collectors are not purged. i weld the outside and inside of the collectors and then clean it up. An .065 wall i would deff recommend purging if using it on a turbo application. another option besides purging can be solar flux which is like a paste you put on the inside of the tube and you can get from spd exhaust and it works really well.

Re: Centerline Finally Does It!

Question - how are you cutting the pie pieces? They look too small to fit into a vice for a band saw...

Not if you cut them off of a longer piece that is clamped. The pie would be the drop.

Haven't seen any back purge setups in any of the pics yet. Are you back purging these stainless manis at all?

Great work, keep it up!

So on Schedule 10 (.109 wall) you wouldn't backpurge, just do a root then filler pass?

Re: Centerline Finally Does It!

No, I don’t back purge unless the customer asks and haven’t had any fail yet. It isn’t necessary in most cases to purge these just make sure you have a nice bevel to get great penetration and you should be able to do it in 1 pass.

ill be doing some thin wall stuff which i will be purging due to the car it will be going on and it will be a turbo app.

Re: Centerline Finally Does It!

Some of those flex joints have leaked at high boost on the race kits i've built. Not at the weld but in the strands between the end flanges. Have you had the same problem?.... How much boost are you running in your applications?

What do you use to clean your pipe before you weld it?

Vibrant sells flex couplers with pipe inside the stranding, as well as just the stranded (which as you said can leak)
