My first welder

Hello there

I'm just starting out in welding and I was thinking about purchasing a "Lincoln Invertec 170s" (with TIG func.) as the first welder.

What do you think about this machine?
Does this machine allow me to weld aluminum if i need?

By the way, what do you say about "Solter" brand compared to "Lincoln"?

Thanks for your eventual attention.
Greetings

From Portugal

Re: My first welder

Lincoln does not list a 170 on their website, so either its an older model or one that is only available overseas?

I have used both the Invertec V350 Pro and the V205, both of them were very nice machines.

If it is AC/DC you can weld aluminum with it. As far as I know, the V205 is the smallest inverter with AC that Lincoln makes here in the U.S. The 155 and 160 are DC only.

"From Portugal"

It sounds like a small machine, but it should be very efficient. My transformer tig machine is rated at 165 amps, and is ok for small projects.

I am unfamiliar with Solter Brand.

Just curious, are there "Lincoln Invertec V270" model in your country? If yes, how much it costs?

Yes, the Solter brand is Spanish but here in Portugal they says it is a very good brand.

Sandy shared the link of the exactly machine im talking.

Re: My first welder

You need AC to tig weld aluminum.
Lincoln makes a lot of DC only machines. Make sure the model you are looking at has AC/DC at the end of the model name.

Lincoln did make a V300 but not anymore, that is one of the machines I learned on. I don't know if they used to make a 270, if so, it would probably be a fairly old machine.

Machine's AC/DC are a much more expensive.
I thought TIG without AC allowed to weld aluminum. I read it on THIS website

I found an used lincoln V270 TP 2V but it costs 1600€, the lincoln 170s only costs € 450 also used.

I find the word "overkill" to be "under rated." Conversely, "under powered" is a word I'd rather never need.

Sorry, but what does "3/16" means? Is the electrode diameter?
If i can weld aluminium with 3/16 diameter electrode this machine is excelent for me, at least that's what I think now .

Re: My first welder

caxuda,

You will not be able to weld aluminum using the TIG process with the 170s.

and for all practical purposes you will not be able to weld aluminum using the Stick process either on the 170s

Thanks.
I decided to forget the aluminum, because the machines AC / DC or MIG are much more expensive.

I think i'll buy the lincoln 170s, we'll see.

Re: My first welder

Hi again my friends

I have good news.
I've bought my first welding machine, it's a solter ICON-1970 PRO CEL, HERE's the link. Came a good deal and I did not refuse.

This weekend I was in my farm, in a different and a bit far city, and I started my first welding project. I decided to do a basketball board (4ft x 3ft).
Take this opportunity to say I did a pretty **** welding, I do not care, machine's fault.

Greetings

edit:
I'm soooooooo stupid................
I was reading things on the internet about welding and I found the torch was attached to the wrong pole (positive).....
Did this brings any problem for the machine, or does it had any welding influence?

Greetings

It won't hurt the machine. In fact the leads are switched depending on if u do flux core or gas shielded (mig)

Oh thank god...
Im just doing normal, flux core, right? How do i have to connect?

I've been using 2.5mm but i think they are too thin. What electrodes should i buy for my project?
By the way what is the maximum size that this machine (180 amps) can handle?

Thanks for the fast answer.

should say in the manual which i'm sure is available from dealer or online. we are talking about a wire feed machine here, right? the wire is the electrode. the "tip" is the part at the end of the gun and should be matched to wire size: .023, .030, .035, .045. it's been a long time since i've used flux core, it makes for ugly welds, but probably well suited for repairing rusty farm equipment on the fly. just be sure to chip as much of that slag off the weld when ur done, it's corrosive. with ur machine, I think probably .035 flux core should allow u to weld up to 1/4" steel maybe more w/ technique?

Re: My first welder

Thank you very much

My manual does not say much thing cause my machine is off their professional line of inverters. Other lines has a manual more user friendly.
I'll study that.

Thanks again

Guys the link he put up is to a stick machine not a wire feed from what I can tell.
