The one I have was done with a 110 MIG 2 years ago.... when I knew jack about welding...... And I was on a conference call while welding......

I am welding a new design..... and I have now graduated to noob status.........

I have a long way to go.... but here is the first part.....

Pics.... and a video.....

That looks to be one stout base you got going there, now how about spouting out the info. IE material size and thickness and your welding parameters. You know just the facts ,lol. Lookig good keep up the posts and good work.

Good luck
God speed
And happy welding

Re: My latest Project..... another table..... the base....

Oh right... the details....

The metal is 4"X4" and 1/4" wall......

For the non-imperial group.... I have no idea what the equates too......

I was using 1/8" 7018 AC rod....... was at about 125 amps...... ish.......

I use a Lincoln Squarewave 175 Pro (meant for TIG, but can do Stick)......

I tacked it with my Lincoln MIG SP 125 ...........

Re: My latest Project..... another table..... the base....

I was wondering why yous arc sounded so odd to me,thought it might have been the audio, but when I read your spec and saw you run squarewave Lincoln...ooohhh k. We got one at work,Iike tig with it but not a fan of the stick. Too many years on buzz box comet. Don't know too much bout welding, but listening to what yourdoing is as important as seeing.I think. Project looks pretty massive, keep it coming. Might post a few pics of my, muchless massive table.

Yeah the AC7018 sounds funny to me too....... Weak sounding... But I got it for my 1944 AC machine originally........

100X100mmX(rough)6mm.

Metal sections here are made metric, so that would be the closest unless i ordered steel from your side of the pond.

We are the last country on imperial I think...... In high school I knew metric better than anything..... It makes more sense...... But 20 years later...... I think in 1/16" increments......... And can barely speak metric..... Sad...... I should know better than be a red neck.........

Cool man. I appreciate the fact you took the time to make the vid too. I have a square wave 175 as well, but haven't tried stick on it. I've done it once, for about two seconds.

Nice fex! I have never seen stick before. I assume mig would be most people's preference for this job? I am lucky enough to have a mig machine so my big table was done part tig (for practice) and the rest mig. Yes, 4x4 is bigg ace sheeat! Nice work fex, can't wait to see the rest!

I like the way the 175sw burns rods. You need to get some non AC 7018. The results will noticeable immediately. Nice base I really like the locking casters.

The most important english/metric conversion is 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters. So, if you've got something in inches, multiply by 25.4 to get millimeters. If you've got millimeters, divide by 25.4 to get inches.

4 inches x 25.4 mm/in. = 101.6 mm

101.6 mm / 25.4 mm/in. = 4 inches

In the both of the above examples, you're basically multiplying the original figure by a fraction equivalent to 1 (since 1 inch = 25.4 mm, if you make fraction of it either way, it's equal to 1). And since anything multiplied by 1 is equal to the original value, you've still got the same distance, but now in different units since the units in the numerator (top) of the original and the denominator (bottom) of the conversion cancel each other out:

4 in. ___25.4 mm ___ 101.6 mm
------- x ---------------- = -----------------
________ 1 in.

101.6 mm ____1 in. ______ 4 in.
--------------- x --------------- = ------------
___________ 25.4 mm

(Ignore the underscores above - had to put them in to keep things spaced out properly...)

The sanity check is that for a given distance, its measure in millimeters will always be larger number than its measure in inches since millimeters are smaller and it takes more of them to go the same distance.

I made a little more progress today..... Got a chance to sharpen my pencil on 6010 5P+ and 7018.....

Tacked with my tiny SP125 MIG......

Now to go shopping for that 1/2" top..........

$300 in so far....... plus consumables...... so probably $350 ish......

Base and uprights look very stout, why did you make the top meant to hold the 1/2" plate so flimsy? It looks like 1.5"x1.5" tubing...

Yep and 1/4" wall.......

Was going to go bigger but the height was starting to get out of hand is I went 1/2" thinner than planned...... That and I'm using drop for this table and couldn't find pieces of 2" when I was at the shop so I went with this instead.....

It's actually extremely stout and pretty darn flat...... The top rest on the two uprights mostly I figure.....

if you think of one sixteenth as 6 hundrdths, and one millimter as 3 hundredths, you can go back and forrth pretty easy and be in the ballpark..

Re: My latest Project..... another table..... the base....

HI there Fexal,

Very nice on your latest project, like also the base fab, very sturdy, are you using an AC or a DC E7018 welding electrode, just wanted to know which is better to use between the two rods. Thanks

Oh, just watched also your other videos, so cool on the X FAB signage design !!!!!!!!!!

---------------------------------------------------------

OH so sorry for the question on the 7018 rod thing, just checked again your post and saw that you mentioned using an AC 7018 rod,

Thanks again.

Re: My latest Project..... another table..... the base....

Hey Fex,

The table is looking good. Is that Google Sketchup? If so, wondering how you like it? I started using it to layout small fab jobs for myself and the people who insist on telling me a story about what they want me to make. I've tried a bunch of different CAD/CAM products but I always seem to back to Sketchup because its quick (relatively), easy and with a free plugin I can export to .dxf for cut paths on the CNC.

Re: My latest Project..... another table..... the base....

Yep I used Google Sketchup..... It's an intuitive program and I was able to design the table with very little time involved to learn how to use it......

In reality I ended up changing a few things but the drawing really helped set the idea in place.....

I have done things without drawings but I'm never happy with them...... So now I draw everything before I start buying metal.....

Regarding AC 7018...... It's good rod but I'll be using DC next time as I like it better.....

Re: My latest Project..... another table..... the base....

I got the local steel guy to cut my 1/2" top (30X60). I gave him $100 cash for it....

I took some photos of the top.... as it sits on my base...... not yet tacked........

It's not flat........ hopefully I can somewhat correct that with good tacks.....

Pics now.....

Re: My latest Project..... another table..... the base....

And just for shiggles.......

I took some pics of the table I built over two years ago..... that I will be tearing down soon.....

I did this old thing with a 110 Mig..... when I knew nothing.......

Notice that I was trying to build this table with that machine...... using steel that was WAY too thick..... and I had no idea about penetration or welding..... (same topic.....).......

This was 2009.....

Those pics first....... then another post of new welds...... on the new table.....

Old table Pics......

Re: My latest Project..... another table..... the base....

Maybe during real use it is not but.... right now it looks tippy! The base looks almost as wide as the top plate, but the free turning casters will reduce (and displace) the real base of the table further away from the edge of the table.

I wish I could explain it better, Just hope you get the idea.

Mikel
