All the IR tow behinds I've ever used were rotary screw machines...

Re: Air compressor questions

Dsw is correct all the IR compressors (now doosan) use a rotary airend that is hooked up to a diesel engine. We use John Deere, kubota, yanmar, cats, and cummins engines. I know because I work at the plant that builds them.

I had something like this in mind for my shop. But I am afraid to ask what it costs. Anyone have a better idea?

Sulliair uses a Ford Motor, but actually any V or opposing engine with the right firing order can work.
I remember seeing an old chysler or Dodge set up the same way, too many years and I can't remember which block it was.

Deve:
here a price on schulz pump in that size range:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SCHULZ-AIR-C...item4d015a8fcd

So a American made head is going to cost a fair bit more, plus motor and tank.

A 15 hp seems to be the sweet spot on this at $1000 ish for the pump and a big three phase 15 hp motor could be got used reasonable used.

Re: Air compressor questions

So we got a tour of the largest air compressor sales/service place in our area, and the salesman used his 'orifice' calculator to tell us what size air compressor we need for sandblasting using a 1/4 inch nozzle. Comes to 100cfm. So the very minimum compressor for this is a 25 horse screw drive compressor and about 7k$ with the drier unit (used 1986 unit/the new ones are about 11k). I cant accept this is the final solution. Comments?

I cant help you on how much cfm you need but if its 100 cfm ( and I know sandblasters are air HOGS ). Ebay search Sullair. You didn't say whether you wanted a portable or stationary but here are a couple examples at a much better price mark.

Re: Air compressor questions

I would talk to sand blasting people. Seems like a lot of air unless you are doing major projects or full time blasting
