6ton barrel vise / press......A few pieces of angle iron, a couple of 3/4" bolts and a cheap hydraulic jack.....BINGO!

came across this thread tonight, man I am excited. I will be copying a lot of your guys stuff, this stuff is great, ideas, ingenuity, and improvising. I LOVE IT here's a few that I had laying around, they don't really compare, they are all realitivaly cheap and readily available, but when you don't have the patience to run to the tool store or wait for the snap on guy this what I have made... more to come

Tool for standing up 2"x6" tubing used for lath. Works wonders when the entire length is a few hundred pounds and you're sitting on a 4" I-beam flange. 4" isn't really enough for a whole buttcheek.

Here's my contribution.
One of the tools I have made, its a bending jig, made for bending flat stock of up to 4" wide, I have used this to bend up to 1/2" thick stock, and can bend as short as 2" from one bend to another!
I made the jig for a smaller shop press that I had, and am now converting it to be used on this monster! "The second pic"

Here's a "poor man's" faceplate I made for a friends wood lathe.


I welded a nut with the threads that match his lathe spindle to a chunk of 3/4" plate. Then mounted it on a piece of all-thread, chuck it in the metal lathe, turned the plate into a circle and faced it off. I've just recently started using a metal lathe and my skills are not so good. I couldn't get a very nice finish. The facing was fair, but the outside edge kept chattering. I don't think I'm grinding my tool bits correctly (HSS). It'll be good enough for wood working.

Make sure that:
The chissel is right on centre
The angles are right
There's not too much freeplay in the cross slide

Then you should be ok.

I would have thought you could get a better hold on it by chucking the nut in a three-jaw, and using a live center on the back side if needed. Also, taking a light, fine cut with a nearly squared edge rather than using a more rounded tool will cut the chatter for the last cut.

You might find that the libraries in your area have some basic machining textbooks. If not, (ours threw stuff like that away long ago; isn't PC), take a look at the reprints of old manuals and such at
