Completely new...jumped in headfirst

I've only been welding for six weeks or so, but I love it and see it as a possible career choice. Plus I do a lot of my own mechanic work on my car and having welding down as a skill could come in handy in the future.

Re: Completely new...jumped in headfirst

Welcome to the site Blaze. I started welding for the same reason, to support my car hobby. It's so nice to be able to fab up your own brackets, piping, fix cracked stuff, build new things... What kind of machines/process do you use?

btw KHK, nice avatar

Re: Completely new...jumped in headfirst

Thanks all!

Mello: I use what the school ag. shop has: Lincoln 45/215 Arc, Miller MIG, and just an oxy-acetylene welder that is currently unusable because it's run out of one of the gasses. I saw a guy welding on his Camaro afterschool one day...it's ridiculous. It's a Camaro on a 4x4 chassis, horn array, Christmas lights under the front fender, two CB radio antennas off the rear bumper, and etc.

Cool. I really like my miler MIG, it's a small 110v unit but I haven't had any problems with it. Haven't had a chance to mess with O/A yet, been thinking of picking up a torch set for a while now.

Wow, that sounds terrible LOL. I can appreciate just about any cleanly done automotive project.. Not to knock some guy's pride and joy or hard work, but that thing sounds completely tasteless LOL. If you get a chance you should sneak a picture and upload it

Re: Completely new...jumped in headfirst

I don't remember what size ours is. I haven't had much of a chance to use it either...I've been busy with an FFA Skills contest and other small projects around the ag. shop.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Except I tend to respect the guys who actually do their own mods more then those who send their cars to a shop for everything.

My car: 1998 Volvo S70 GLT
-B5254T (I5 with a low pressure turbo) engine
-ipd HD TCV
-ipd sparkplug wires
-ipd black sport grille
-did my own timing/serpentine belt, water pump, thermostat, radiator hose, cabin/air filter, sparkplugs, brake lights, antenna replacement, radio lights, shifter light, vacuum line elbow joints, brake rotor/calipers, tire rotation, rear view mirror, PCV valve
-GLT sport package includes: leather interior, wood grain trim, power windows/locks/sunroof, trunk spoiler, sport suspension, stock Alpine sound system, front/rear fog lights

The only repairs I didn't do were my main rear seal and my rear cam seal. So you can see why I respect the guys who do their own mods more.

If any of you happen to have a Volvo and need DIY help, volvoforums.com and volvolution.com are two excellent forums.
