Question on XMT 300 cc/cv

Im looking at a used one. I though this was just a Tig/Stick machine out of the box and it needed a Suitcase to Mig with it.

Or am i just totally confused?

Re: Question on XMT 300 cc/cv

It's strictly a power source. You need to add to it. Usually you find them with leads for stick. To do tig you'd need the reg and torch with gas valve. To do mig you'd need some sort of feeder, either a stationary feeder or suitcase. I'm not that familiar with the XMT300's, but the XMT304's will run either a remote feeder or a voltage sensing feeder depending on how you set the XMT.

Be sure it works. From what I understand if the boards go in one of the XMT 300's, it will cost more than it's worth to fix it.

The XMT 300 was offered as a TIG/SMAW power source ONLY & also as a CC/CV model which will do stick & wire welding. The TIG version had built in start HF. CC/CV models will scratch start DC TIG, you'll need an HF starter unit if you want true no touch DC TIG with HF start.

In the case you purchased a CC/CV model, yes, you would need a wire feeder to MIG weld with it. The XMT has a 14 pin remote out that will operate both 24 & 115 volt powered Miller wire feeders & you can also run a voltage sensing type feeder off it as well.

You may want to consider passing on it unless it's very reasonably priced ($500 or preferably much less), being the XMT 304 machines (used in good condition) are available now for well under $1500 regularly & if the 300 were to have issues, it can become very expensive to repair with little or no guarantees. Usually when they blow a board or module, junking it is the better option unless you are super familiar with the machine & you just happened to have a pile of parts machines handy to scavenge parts from.

There's a reason many service techs call them "Popcorn Machines"

There were also some units that were manufactured High Voltage input power ONLY (460/575). You'll be dead in the water unless you happen to have 460 in your shop. Look it over real well & ask to see it weld before you buy it.

Good luck

Re: Question on XMT 300 cc/cv

You might check with this guy.
http://weldingweb.com/showthread.php?t=43358

He had a few feeders listed just a few days ago. The Miller S52's would work if thats a CC/CV machine you have, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Airco feeder isn't a rebadged Miller. You might also PM Steve (7A749) above and see if he's got any feeders right now. His refurbs are great.

Re: Question on XMT 300 cc/cv

The spoolgun will require an additional controler to run on an XMT IIRC (I want to say it's the WC-24 thats needed but can't find my info right now). Also not all Miller spoolguns are compatible with the XMT's. My 3035 spoolgun for my MM185 for example isn't compatible with the XMT.

From quick looking at long as it has a 14 pint connector and speed control on the gun. its good to go. That is good news. i could probably borrow a 30A fairly easy.
