Re: is this plasma worth 400.00

The link didnt even work for me...

But Id assume that a working hypertherm for $400 is a good buy. Heck, Id do it, I could use a plasma cutter

Good luck dude! If you go check it out, just make sure EVERYTHING works and it hasnt been abused or anything

link doesnt work... you linked the sellers anonymous email link....

when you sitting on the ad page, copy and paste the address at the top of the page with the
http:// in it.. like this http://kansascity.craigslist.org/tls/2502775907.html

some of the older plasma cutters you have to watch out for... i seen an older unit that looked new, but needed a torch that cost near what they were asking for the plasma cutter..

For $1000 you could buy a new Powermax 30....complete with warranty.
More power, better technology, better system.

Re: is this plasma worth 400.00

Maybe this will give you some idea.

Just picked up a Hypertherm Max42 (yeah, its 15 years old) off CL for $300.00 including half a dozen retaining caps, electrodes, nozzles and swirl cups. Seller said it was not working and it turned out to be the torch head safety switch for the retaining cap.

Used it tonight to cut some 1/4" aluminum for a truck repair. Works great. I ordered some shielded consumables for the torch from my LWS so I can drag with it but I have no complaints about the performance.

Hard to go wrong for 3 bills.

Re: is this plasma worth 400.00

Part II:

Found the CL link that you were asking about. Its a Hypertherm 190c and I'm pretty sure its recommended cut is like 1/8" on mild steel with a max severance of 1/4".

If it were me, I'd keep looking. The only reason I picked up the MAX42 was because I needed something in that class range immediately and the guy was down the road and it was only $300 and my tanks are almost empty. So, it was just one of those things. Had it been a lower current machine, I wouldn't have even considered it.

Re: is this plasma worth 400.00

Yeah, that is pretty small...

Personally, Id save my money. I got about $500 in my torch setup, and It was all brand new (except for the tanks and cart), and works great. It can cut way thicker than that plasma, plus weld and heat. I think that was worth the extra $100. Well, good luck whatever you do

Re: is this plasma worth 400.00

The Powermax190 was manufactured by Miller for Hypertherm up until about 1 year ago. It is a 12 amp plasma with an onboard compressor. This unit was dsigned for sheet metal work...and does a decent job on materials thinner than about 1/8". It can sever 1/4" at very slow speeds......and at very low duty cycles.

It is a good unit if its thickness range is where you are planning to use it....great for HVAC and roofing installers, etc. It is worth the money if purchased for the intended use....but it is not a good plasma for someone doing general metal fabrication.

thanks for the info jim , great to have some one on the site that knows hypertherm !

i was hoping it was at least a 30amp . but i know very little about plasma's . so its no suprise to me that its only 12amp . ill keep watching craigs list for a deal and post here before i jump on it .

Also is there any perticular model i should look for ? we have a miller spectrum at work and i really like it > (dont know the amps either ) . but theres no way i could afford that machine . id be looking to cut up to about 1/2 - 5/8" thick steel etc .

id really like to get a Hypertherm though

thanks for any input

Re: is this plasma worth 400.00

Watch for a Powermax600 (40 amps) Powermax900 (55 amps) or Powermax1000 (60 amps)......these are all very strong but older generation Hypertherm systems...there are many in the field so they pop up on the used market occasionally. There are over 55,000 of the 600's out there.....and I have seen them in the $500 to $600 range on Craigslist.

Re: is this plasma worth 400.00

You can buy a brand new Powermax30 for around $1000 (online prices)....the 30 is a bit more powerful, will have a new machine warranty, and will provide much longer consumable parts life. Occasionally you will find a used 30 on the market.

One of the tools I use for Craig's is a search aggregator like crazedlist.org. You need to have Firefox to use it but I find that it works very well. I can bring up the whole state in a matter of seconds if I'm looking for a certain machine.

If you're not already using something like this, give it a try. Its helped me find some killer deals.
